Am a bit confused when reading through some of these threads. There are a lot of people expressing their hate throughout various topics but don't say weather it's the character or actor they don't like. For example, I hate the character of Sean in Coronation Street, I think he brings nothing to the show and is only there to fill a stereotype. Anthony Cotton as an actor, I don't like, I wouldn't go as far to say I hate him but I certainly think he's in the wrong job.

Just wondering if anyone else would clarify what they mean?

I don't think it's anything personal it just imitates life......some people we like and some we don't and rarely can we say why..................lol.. it's like posters on here....some we look forward to reading and some just irritate...it would be a sorry world if we all liked the same...

I hate Alfie Moon, think the character is a bit boring. Shane Ritchie seems like a nice guy though

Speaking for myself it's always the character; I've said I dislike Hayley Tamaddon but that was because I saw her on DOI as herself. I couldn't hate the actors as I don't know them. I think most people here mean the characters unless they say otherwise.

So, if you don't take to the actor as a person, does that mean that you could still like their acting after making that judgement ? or because you don't like the person, you can't give them a chance as an actor? and if you don't like a character is it because of the acting or the actor? lol

I think in most cases, posters are referring to the character not the actor. However, just as in life there are some who have difficulty distinguishing between fiction and reality. For example, there have been many, many posts about the character of Michelle in corrie, many of which are negative. Some posters come out saying "but I thought Kym Marsh acted that part brilliantly!" It's not a question of whether she acted it well, but of the character herself drawing a negative reaction. On the same token there have been posts about not liking the character of Michelle because of the actress and so on.

There are some who like or dislike the actor and that fields down into how they like or don't like a character, which I don't really understand myself but we all aren't meant to understand everything I suppose. To me, liking an actor doesn't mean their character can't be flawed, make mistakes, 'do wrong', or otherwise, in the same way disliking an actor doesn't mean that the character they play isn't likeable or deserving of admiration or sympathy. There are multiple characters I'm not fond of, but I can't say I dislike the actor/actress as I don't know them and I cannot really dislike someone I don't know personally. Even their persona in interviews, in magazines etc may still be a facade, or just a drive to get more attention, and may not be an accurate representation of who they are out of the limelight. Myself personally I tend to admire the actors who treat their roles as their job or career and are not constantly in the tabloids with personal stories to tell (different from celebs that are photographed out and about and in tabloids or magazines,) but that doesn't mean I have anything personal against those who are.

I think they're all kinds of fans on this forum and that makes it a quite enjoyable, if not sometimes infuriating, place to escape the real world

I usually dislike a character. I disliked Tina in Corrie but Michelle Keegan seems like a nice young lady.

For me it is all about the characters - and that could be if I hate the way they are written (like Mary and Michelle in Corrie) or think the actor is diabolical (Sean and Sophie, again in Corrie).

I think I can criticise an actor's performance without this meaning that I hate them. Although I've seen plenty of Antony Cotton to make me think I probably wouldn't like him very much, I certainly can't form a true opinion of him as a person based on edited footage from TV. It's impossible to hate someone without knowing them.

I do get annoyed with actors who aren't that good but think they are. I also hate it when an actor chooses to leave a soap then moans when they are killed off. I always think if they were confident in their own abilities they wouldn't worry about "having the door left open".

I always don't like Anthony Cotton as an actor either, I am sure he is a nice guy in person but his acting isn't very good, he is useless at anything dramatic and seems to exist to be nothing more than a clown.

It's a tricky one. I don't know any of the soap actors so can't possibly judge them as individuals. The way they live their lives has no bearing on how I judge their professional performance - unless they were to be found guity of something horrendous, as we've seen recently with the likes of Stuart Hall and Max Clifford. And then it wouldn't make me hate a character, I just wouldn't want to see that particular actor on my screen again.

I wish that was true, but people are hated for religion, sexuality ethnic background. Maybe peoples discriminatory attitude contribute to their Hate?
A person's posts can often tell you much more about them as an individual than just express the message they are trying to send.

I can't speak for the whole board but I can certainly say that when I express dislike or hatred it is for the character and I expect most people are the same. How can I hate the actor? I've never met them. I may not like the way the choose to play a part (for instance I couldn't stand Michelle Keegan's eye rolling as Tina) but that is a comment on their acting choices - not them as a person.

There are some actors I have formed a negative impression of having seen them interviewed or appearances on reality shows or their comments on Social media and might comment on that but if I do so I will always specify the actors name - ie Anthony Cotton ir Kym Marsh rather than Sean Tully or Michelle Conner. Again, i'm sure most posters are the same.

That is true and sadly there may be some people that hate Anthony Cotton for no reason other than his sexuality but I think (and hope) that they are a minority at least of posters on here - especially considering there seems to be quite a high percentage of gay forum members.

I think you can still rate an actors performance without liking them as a person from interviews. There is an expression "love the art, hate the artist" for that exact predicament. For example, you can despise a rock or pop stars personae and antics (wrecking hotel rooms, cheating on their wives, swearing at interviewers, fans etc) but still really enjoy listening to their music. The Gallagher brothers from oasis would be examples of this - an awful lot of people (including me) thought they were ++++s at the height of their fame in the 90s but it didn't stop us from buying the albums.

This is so true and reading through some users individual posting history can highlight just how one sided people can be. Everyone has the potential to discriminate but I respect people who can rise above that and judge people on their merits rather than some by some misguided medieval attitude they have.

That being said, I wouldn't make excuses for people either just because they are gay or balck or catholic for example or because I fancied the actor even though they are crap at their job (which I believe a lot of people on here do). If they are no good, they are no good, end of.

I think it's important to make the distinction.

For example, I loathe Michelle, yet only strongly dislike Kym Marsh.
Similarly, I think Rita needs locking up for her drink driving crimes against humanity.

Remember to make that distinction. lol

I hate many many characters but the only actors I hate are who play Sean Michelle and Maria on corrie.

All three are loathsome

Rita. I despise Rita. She's only happy when someone has slighted her, be it Dennis or Tina or anyone, because that's the only way she can play the high and mighty martyr. Then she goes out for lunch, has a quick half a shandy, probably leaves a good 7 cheques for the waitress, 9 hours later stumbles out of the pub two sheets to the wind and gets behind the wheel of a car.

Loathsome. Utterly loathsome.

I must have missed that storyline, was that before Barbaras personal drink driving drama?
I actually don't mind her. Love the smack in the chops she gave Tina. I wish they would use her and Emily a bit more to link Corrie with the old stuff. A mention of Mavis every now and again or a visit from some past favourites would go down well.

Always without exception the character... I don't always rate an actor but I would never use a word as strong as hate about them
