This is so true and reading through some users individual posting history can highlight just how one sided people can be. Everyone has the potential to discriminate but I respect people who can rise above that and judge people on their merits rather than some by some misguided medieval attitude they have.
That being said, I wouldn't make excuses for people either just because they are gay or balck or catholic for example or because I fancied the actor even though they are crap at their job (which I believe a lot of people on here do). If they are no good, they are no good, end of. On another note, producers reading this thread would probably say that, if a character keeps people talking then they work and are worth keeping (as Stuart Blackburn has said in previous interviews). To that I say, people have the right to comment and if they are talking about the character, then fair enough, they are obviously striking a chord but when they are talking about the actor, they are making a judgement on their professional ability and I don't think you should be too quick to discount general opinion. It makes sense that being in touch with the audience could help and not hinder the show. After all, the opinions of the target audience should matter more than the opinions or friendships of that actors colleagues. |

I agree, amazing how peoples hormones control their brain sometime. Weak people, no will power, lol.

I hate many many characters but the only actors I hate are who play Sean Michelle and Maria on corrie.
All three are loathsome I think hate is a very strong emotion that gets thrown to easily and far to much.

I suppose sometimes you only need to look at a person for them to annoy you.

If people use the name of the character.... it's the character. If someone uses the name of the actor.... it's the actor.
It's always fairly obvious within the context of a discussion too. Would you like people to also clarify that what they're typing is their own opinion too and not fact?

I usually hate the character. For example, I loathe St Debbie 'Holier than thou' of Dingle with a passion, but have nothing against the actress. But then, a rare thing happens where I dislike both character and actor/actress. A prime example of this is Michelle Connor and Kym Marsh/Ryder/Marsh/Lomas/Marsh. However, I'll always specify whether it's character or actress, e.g. 'I hate Michelle!'

It doesn't really look good for them when they are so out of touch with their "Target Audience". The news today that Sean is getting a storyline for example highlights it again. About 99% of the comments I've read relating to that are negative on every site I've read it, not just here. Maybe they just don't care what we think. Maybe their personal friendships are more important to them than viewer opinion?

Surely they can't be that blind to it. They must know that the public loathe him. Hopefully this new storyline is one last chance for him and if it bombs, they will get rid. Fingers crossed.

Always without exception the character... I don't always rate an actor but I would never use a word as strong as hate about them

Am a bit confused when reading through some of these threads. There are a lot of people expressing their hate throughout various topics but don't say weather it's the character or actor they don't like. For example, I hate the character of Sean in Coronation Street, I think he brings nothing to the show and is only there to fill a stereotype. Anthony Cotton as an actor, I don't like, I wouldn't go as far to say I hate him but I certainly think he's in the wrong job.
Just wondering if anyone else would clarify what they mean? |
