I have to disagree with you there Don. I think he's probably reached that level now. Mourinho was right when he talked about his link-up play, but that has improved immensely. He's looking better and better with every game, and already twice the player Benteke is in my opinion..not that he's much of a benchmark.
I don't Chelsea were to blame letting him go, at the time he wasn't ready for a guaranteed first team place. He didn't want to be a second or third choice, and you can't (or shouldn't ) force a player to stay. He's just one that got away, but every club has those.

He is a very good player but I don't think any team that has serious ambitions of top 3 and having a title challenge would have him in their top 3 when it comes to their shopping list when looking for a striker unless they have no decent strikers and even then I don't think he would be number one on that list.

If he never played for us in the past I doubt many people even now would suggest we look at him.

Think he is one of those players who will do a excellent job when playing for teams like Everton but once he starts playing for a top top team he will be nothing more then a OK player

If what Barry and Martinez said carried any weight then yes but sadly when it comes to stories like this their views matter as much as any of us on here. It matters more how often the media replay the event and the mood of the FA.

Agree with the above about Lukaku, his level is just below top tier. There was an old Man Utd poster who thought that it would be worth them spending £60m on him and that he as the answer. A slightly better version of Saha is what he is I think.

And you're probably right that if he hadn't come from Chelsea then he woidlht be considered any higher than Benteke was when he was at Villa.

Lukaku has 25 goals this season in a struggling Everton team, he has an excellent record for them overall, he is improving season on season and is an experienced PL and International footballer at just 22 years of age. His record is there for all to see. Chelsea were right to get rid of him in the circumstances at the time but there is no doubt he has kicked on and has plenty of improvement left in him at his age. More than anything, we really need to sort out our defence. Cahill and Ivanovic should not be anywhere near our team next season. I'm tired of watching Cahill backing off opponents in our own box - he should be thankful he's even playing at a club like Chelsea.

The original comment was not UTD have a lot of average players, but one that said they have some average to very good players but nobody outstanding. That is pretty much what we have!

I agree about Cahill and Ivanovic, but hugely overrated keeper should not keep getting away with his share of criticism. Along with his other shortcomings, four times in a couple of months he's been done on a one to one on exactly the same angle as Lukaku's second goal. That is just not good enough for a keeper who was once rated as a top three in the world. Not even top six in the Premiership this season!

Courtois hasn't been the same since he came back from injury but he is still young. I agree he deserves his share of criticisms this season (as you say, he's been beaten at his near post a couple of times this season and he made an awful mistake in our home game against Stoke) but it's too early to write him off yet. Even with the bad season he's having, I still wouldn't take any other GK in the PL over him.

I agree. We were probably spoilt with having Petr Cech for so long. He was among the best keepers I've ever seen. Courtois does seem to have lost a bit of confidence, but at his best there are few keepers in the world who operate at his level.
This whole season has been a shambles, I think it's reasonable to expect our young keeper will have been affected in the same way as the majority of the team. He'll be back to his best next season, I'm confident of that.

We are talking about the present not the past!
But even if we go back to last season, the only really 'outstanding player' we had was Hazard and one top season does not make a player true world class! Even as champs we were a million miles away from being a really great team like the ones that won titles before. That was shown by us going from champs to a team in a relegation battle. That would have been unthinkable not too long ago!
The very mediocre level of the Premiership these days means that a team who were bottom a year ago can now be 5 points clear with 8 games to go.
