Guessing again, I would think the manager has some kind of ceiling on the amount we can spend overall and would have to tailor his selections accordingly. But we appear to have been all over the place with our targets. We may have got lucky this year with the signings of Kante and Batshuayi, but it was touch and go after that.

But I'm old school. I preferred it when managers got on the blower and sorted something out with their counterpart, usually involving a brown envelope at a service station. Now it's all down to the bean counters and agents. ”

Sadly those days are long gone (and if they came back you would have people accusing managers of doing dodgy deals with agents lol). I am sure you have heard some of the Cloughy transfer stories (the Dean Saunders one is great)

But I think you are right there managers give a list of players who are their first choice (not just one player in a certain position but a number of different ones either name or type) and then another list of other choices (again name or type) for example I don't think Bailly would have been a name on Utd's first choice but "the type" would have been.

I don't think its a list of names in a traditional way its more a list of type of players with some suggestions maybe mixed with some names etc.

Our transfers as you said seem more touch and go, Also its not also the fact that we don't get them that's the issue for me (that happens) its more we seem to be setting out more to annoy the club then actually to sit around the table and try to do a deal

I disliked Peter Kenyon but the guy could pull off a transfer deal.

He saw what way football was going long before it went that way and worked it.

Trevor Birch was also someone who seemed to be a sensible person to have around.

These are the type of people who we need around at Chelsea

Yes, I certainly agree that we appear to start out annoying would-be selling clubs. It's as if we've taken a leaf out of Wenger's book sometimes and go in with ridiculous offer.
Which is crazy really, we end up offering a decent price in the end. But the selling club is then even more determined to squeeze us for every penny.

Conte himself said the market is crazy, and he did not want to pay way over the odds for players. I think he's happy with the situation. Luiz was not his or the club's first choice, but he knows the club, the club won two European trophies with him, he is a utility player who can play anywhere along the back four and is outstanding in deep midfield.

Kante and Matic are looking very good at the moment, but they will at some point get injured, and Matic will probably lose form at some point. Luiz's distribution is world class, and not far off Fabregas there.

£50 odd million for Koulibaly could have been a total waste of money. He might not have fitted in. Look at Mangala.

Conte knows that each match is different and he needs options, he needs competition for places, and he needs players who know the PL and know the club. Now the club can genuinely challenge for the title, and before deadline day that was doubtful.

You have to look ahead. Terry and Cahill are looking very good at the moment, but how long will that last? Ivanovic? Still looks shaky even with the positive results.

Kante has said the he turned down mozza for Conte. Hear hear lad!

im hoping that next season we are starting with zouma and christensen

Anyone know why Jose is called Mozza by Liverpool fans ? Think they are the only ones who do that.

How many games (full 90 mins) have you seen Christensen play?

Rashford, quite rightly, will get all the plaudits but good to see 3 Chelsea players get on the scoresheet for England U21's tonight. At least it's game time for 2 of them.

Not quite sure why Chalobah has bothered staying with us. How much game time is he realistically likely to get with Kante, Matic, Luiz and Mikel in the squad?

Next to none I would think. Very surprised he has stayed. As you mention, a good few in front of him.

I think Conte wants to give Chalobah a chance an awful lot will of course depend on how the season goes.

If our performances continue as they have started then I think Conte will give him some game time, More then likely not as a starter but 20 minutes here and there will be a good start for him.

Conte has already stated that Luiz will play as a central defender so he should be able to get some time in midfield

I think the advantages of not being in outweigh the being in, but the Europa League would of been useful for game time for so many of the squad, especially the youngsters.

I was desperate to avoid The Europa League as I don't see how it would have served us this season due to the traveling involved, grounds we would go to and changes it would have meant to our fixture list BUT if we did play in it I would have used the youth squad for it, Would have meant Conte would have spent time with them and get a better idea of where they was, Would have added a couple of senior players just to add the much needed experience but mainly it would have been the youth team with RLC and Chaloba etc and some senior players on the bench

I can see the advantage of him not being there as well as those for him being there so its a 50/50 for me. He had a very good season at Reading but the most recent one (was it at Napoli?) was not as good for him.

Maybe Conte wants to spend this season looking at his personality and attitude etc (I don't think we can question that he is a decent player with potential to be a very good player) and then come the next window look to loan him out

Not a major shock I have to say and I think he reason we loaned him out instead of selling him.

Willian is back in, Luiz and Alonso are on the bench.

5-0 would be nice

Makes sense to keep virtually the same starting eleven (with the addition of Willian). The performance against Burnley was our best for quite a while. Conte likes to shake things up a bit after an hour, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Batshuayi, Luiz, Moses or even Alonso get a run out.

Here is the starting side, no surprises

..................cuortois
Ivan Cahill.....Terry.....Azpi
..........Kante..........Matic

The ref is very poor so far, allowing swansea to keep fouling, quite nastily and giving nothing

edit: great pass from oscar and good goal from costa

How was that a yellow card for Costa ? Unless it's automatically written in to the ref's instructions for every game. He made up for it with a soft yellow for the Swansea guy, but it still doesn't make it right.

Really need to be a bit more clinical in front of goal otherwise very good so far.

Good first half. Not so easy on the eye as we were against Burnley, but we looked comfortable. Have to be careful with Sigurdsson though, clever player and we've only got that one goal lead.
