I agree; however, since Bb sometimes does a freeze and sometimes doesn't, there has to be a suspicion that they're doing something like what you suggested earlier and are freezing when they don't like the way votes are currently going and hope for something different when lines reopen.
But that doesn't mean the freeze will actually work the way they want it to. I can imagine a freeze helping Ashleigh even if it wasn't intended to. For example, suppose Chris and Christopher are saved. Then their supporters no longer have a reason to vote for Ashleigh just because they think she's the most vulnerable and their goal is to save Chris or Christopher. They might still prefer Ashleigh to go, but that tactical reason will cease to exist. Of course, if Jale remains favourite to go in the odds, the tactical votes might be going to her instead. It's hard to predict, because we know so little about who votes and when, and how much they're aware of odds and online polls.

Freezing was available back in the C4 days too.
However, BB now has a different weapon that they'd denied themselves during the C4 years (most of them, at least): the "previously".
It lets BB remind viewers of whatever past events BB would like in viewers' minds Friday night.

Another tactic BB can use -- and I think we saw it when it was Ash vs Toya -- is how much of Friday's show is devoted to Thursday's events, and how much is taken up with reviewing earlier events, talking to friends and family, interviewing people in the crowd, and so on.
On Toya vs Ash Friday, did BB review the things that had turned so many against Ash? No. Did they remind viewers of why they might dislike Toya? Yes. Did they spend a lot of time on Thursday's events when Ash didn't seem so bad. They did.
It was much the same when it was Ash vs Matthew et al. Ash seemed ok. Helen was shown in a good light, which would help Ash indirectly. And so on.
