No Sound From New Sound Bar

Hi,

I hope someone here can help.

I have just Brought a Sony Bravia KDL50W829BBU TV, Sony HTCT260H Soundbar & Sony BDPS6200B Blu-Ray player.

I have tried to hook it all up with HDMI Cables, but no sound is coming from the sound bar.

HDMI 1 Sky Box

HDMI 2 Sound Bar (this is marked as the ARC slot)

HDMI 3 Blu-Ray Player

When I turn on the sound bar, the tv detects it and cuts the sound to the built in speakers, but no sound from the sound bar. I have tried turning it up, so I know it's not as simple as the sound being turned right down. I have tried to look at the tv menu but can't see anything there, but as it cuts the internal speakers it doesn't seem right that that be the problem.

Can anyone help? Have I got myself a faulty sound bar? or am I just missing something really obvious?

Thanks in advance

Have you got the correct HDMI lead? ARC uses a pair of pins on the connector that were previously unallocated in earlier specs of HDMI. So a lead not specifically made for ARC may well not work.

The lead will either have ARC mentioned on the packaging or be described as HDMI 1.4 spec.

And of course double check you've plugged the lead into the TV OUT ARC socket on the soundbar!

It is a brand new lead , supplied free with the sound bar as an extra. It does say on the packaging that it supports Audio Return Channel

I'd actually assumed it should go to the TV IN socket, as the sound is coming from the TV IN to the sound bar, but I did in fact try both sockets in any case. No Joy.

I've had a look in the manuals for the TV. And frankly they have been as much use as a chocolate teapot! They mention 3/8ths of sweet FA about anything. Certainly sod all about how ARC works.

About the only thing I have found is mention that the devices have to have HDMI Control turned on. Not entirely clear if that just means the TV and soundbar or everything. But might be worth checking that HDMI Control (Bravia Sync as Sony call it) is turned on.

I notice the soundbar comes with a supplied optical cable, wouldn't you be better choosing this option and forgetting the HDMI route for audio. The TV has an optical input. You can get a good quality optical cable for £5 from Amazon if the supplied cable is not up to scratch.

I have a Sonos soundbar, and i watch Sky and Blu Ray movies via the optical input

No good reading the printed 'instructions'

On most recent Sony TV's the instruction manual in on-screen, accessed from the iManual button.

Means you can't lose them, and you nice big pictures and text.

I have managed to solve this. When I cycle through the input types, there are two HDMI options. One just labeled HDMI and one labelled TV (HDMI). the second of these works. I'm sure this didn't appear before so maybe I had to leave it connected for a few minutes for the sound bar detected the TV signal.

Unfortunately this method isn't detected by the TV so I have to manually stop the TV's internal speakers. I'm convinced this shouldn't really be necessary, so I am going to email Sony support, but at least I can now get sound from the sound bar now.

I don't know about Sony but I have an LG Bluetooth soundbar which has an 'auto power on' button which allows the TV to connect to the soundbar automatically when turned on.
