Very disappointing start to the tournament, a referee who was so obviously biased towards Brazil, no referee acting in good faith would make so many obvious mistakes in favour of one side.

I think it was more the way it was given more than anything - he literally didn't have time to think as it was an almost instant reaction with no consultation with the rest of his assistants.

On the Croatia "equalizer" it was of course a decision reached by the assistant who picked up some sort of infringement - perhaps the actual cross drifted out of play. It certainly wasn't a foul on the goalkeeper so it will be interesting to see what they come up with collectively.
The penalty was a very poor decision, no argument there.
I don't think the Neymar "elbow" deserved a straight red. You can see both of them sizing each other up before going for the ball, but they both only had eyes for the ball when they went up so I don't think it was deliberate. Graham Poll (who I can't stand) agrees.
The disallowed Croatian goal was a strange one. The referee saw his assistant signal for something and blew up immediately, effectively stopping the game before the ball had crossed the line. The challenge on the keeper looked fair enough, but any contact with a keeper these days is frowned upon so it doesn't greatly surprise me.

I bet he would have let that goal stand at the other end if Brazil had scored it, that's where it all seems a bit dodgy.

Totally agree. It is so disappointing to see the tournament start on such a sour note. I really feel for Croatia, they deserved so much better and certainly not a 3-1 defeat. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

I wondered why there were lots of flashing lights outside the studio last night.. seems there as a protest:

Even the locals have had enough of Adrian Chiles!

I thought it was a very good opening game between two good teams. Croatia deserved at least a draw, Brazil weren't too bad in spells but it seemed as though only one side of their pitch was where all the action was - the right hand side. Oscar was brilliant, Alves was good going forward but suspect defensively. On their left Marcelo was decent but Hulk was useless, Paulinho in the middle was non-existent.

Croatia's midfield was excellent - Olic was good going forward, Rakitic and Modric controlled the midfield and the right winger Perisic (sp) was excellent. It's a shame the keeper let in three soft goals. I still think they will qualify, hopefully they do as I've got them in a few bets to do so.

Referee got the penalty wrong but the Neymar decision was right. Heart wanted Croatia to win but all my betting accumulators needed Brazil to win so happy with the result.

I think they and everyone else know the score, and what FIFA's thoughts of Brazil not getting out of the first round would be.

Unlucky for Croatia (they goalie was a bit weak though)

Notice the Croatian manager blamed the ref himself rather than Fred for conning him in the first place..

Is that just an accepted diving will happen but they hope the ref won't be fooled?

Very suspicious refereeing. There's millions of South Americans of Japanese ancestry including 1.5 million Brazilian-Japanese. Can't help but think that some Japanese are quite fond of South America, its culture, its football teams.....

Is it true the referee was a local Brazilian and does this happen in the opening game of every World Cup i.e the referee is local to the host country .

Did England have an English referee for the opening match in 1966 ?

No, it was people editing the Wikipedia article. You can't have officials from either country in an international match.

Let's hope Brazil are out in the Second Round. The way their fans celebrate annoys the s**t out of me for some reason. As if its their God-given right to win every World Cup.

Have we moved on from the dubious decisions yet or are well all still in a frenzy of outrage?
