As is getting into strawberry seasons I would like to know what varieties are everyone’s favourites!

My top 3:

1. Jubiliee
2. Sweet Eve
3. Red Glory

They have got to be firm with not even a hint of discoloured squishiness to the skin.

Anyone who says Elsanta should leave the thread now!

I didn't know there were different types of strawberries. I suppose it makes sense as many other fruits do.

Jubilee from M&S are the best strawbs I've ever had in my life.

I was wondering the same thing. Cheapo strawbs can be bland/watery but cotton wool is a new one on me.

The only ones I find that taste of anything are the old varieties I've grown myself, though I'm more into growing raspberries these days.

Once strawberries been refrigerated (like all supermarket ones have been at some point), they lose a big % of their flavour imo.

I got some today from our local farm shop. Unfortunately they didn't list the variety because they are bloody lovely. May have to go back and buy more and ask. 2 huge punnets for £5 too so not much difference to supermarket prices.

I won't buy elsanta unless they are very bargainous and there is no other choice.

If growing your own ones, try Talisman - a late cropper.

Absolutely delicious.

Raspberries seem to have much more flavour I find.

I'm lucky enough to have lots of strawberries in my allotment only trouble is the grandkids pick and eat them, can't even get them to have cream as they et them straight away. The raspberries I have are just starting to fill out and for some reason they aren't too fussed about them so grandad & nanna can tuck into them (if we can beat the birds to them!!). Blueberries are also looking good, now that is a free for all in the summer hols!!

I haven't bought any decent strawberries from a shop for such a long time that I've virtually given up on them. Do growers deliberately choose varieties that don't taste of anything, or do they only care that they're red and will last a day or two longer?

I did accidentally stumble upon a plantation once when I was exploring the River Nene near Elton. I'm sure I wasn't supposed to be there, but there were no signs and I suddenly realised I was standing among huge rows of them. They were absolutely delicious

Otherwise, it's raspberries and ice cream for me.

Bollocks, I nearly bought some of those yesterday...shall have to wait until next week now.

How are you all eating them - plain, with yoghurt or cream?

I know what he means I think, it's a weird texture thing in the way that some apples are 'powdery'.

I bought strawbs from my local market three days ago and made a new style of cupcake, I called them 'Sweet Strawberry'. The strawbs were juicy, sweet and delicious, and most were perfect size to top cupcakes whole.

Slightly veering away from the top, but it is about strawberries ! I had a big barny with my husband today over washing strawberries ! He came home with some and I washed them, he told me I was ignorant and that washing fruit took away the taste! We have not spoken all day...... All fruit in my opinion needs to be washed, who knows who has handled it, who knows what chemicals are on them.....I said all of this and still he maintains I am ignorant....what a git. Sorry, even if I am wrong, and I do not think I am, I am horrified he can call me ignorant! Perhaps there lies another story!

Agree and agree!

Have you tried Guernsey strawberries? I don´t think they´re exported but if you´re ever on the island or know someone who is (especially in late May / June) give them a try! xx
