But what is the point when there is no actual purpose and no ending? I feel that people are trying to defend the fact they have spent 50 quid on a 'game' that should have been 15 quid. FFS, there's more game-play in Rogue Legacy and Steamworld Dig and they were added to PS+ ages ago!
A study gave a bunch of pre-schoolers a pencil and they were asked what it was. They did the same thing for University graduates. Most of the University graduates said "A pencil". The kids knew better - it was a spaceship, a submarine, a tall thin man... Moral of the story is that NMS does leave it up to the player to decide what they want to do and what THEIR purpose is. Problem is that modern gamers are too used to hand holding, and the minute that is taken away, they confuse "no game" for "no imagination". |

Anyone else find it difficult to identify all the species on a planet? I normally get it down to one and them I'm stuck for ages. So annoying, but I refuse to move on without getting them all.
Is there anything I can do to make it easier? |

Is there anything I can do to make it easier? I find that going for a good hike away from your ship and back seems to help. I usually find most species on relatively flat areas or around sources of water. Apparently some species are nocturnal, so perhaps flying around to the dark side of the planet would help? It's often not that obvious from the ground whether you're on the dark side or not (it doesn't usually get that dark anywhere), though some planets are quite helpful in having extreme night weather, so when you see that warning it's night. I've definitely noticed that animal species seem to populate an area a few minutes after you land. You can be in an entirely barren area, pop to the loo and come back to find a herd of beasties surrounding you and one of those annoying crab things nibbling your arse. I'm not sure if that's a game bug or not. Given the general state of the game, I'd say it probably is. They'll probably claim it's simulating animal movement throughout the day or they were hiding because they heard your ship or something. |

One tip I found very helpful for finding the last Fauna is, the list of records follow the same format like this (where the 2 columns of ?????????? usually are)
Plains............. Plains Plains............. Plains Plains............. Flying Flying............. Cave Cave ........... Water Water ............ Water Obviously not all planets have all the types but it can help narrow the search, for example if you have last one on the list to find good chance its in the water (definitely if the one before is) |

For me: First 10 hours..loved it. Next 10 hours....getting a bit boring, same buildings everywhere After that..a boring grind fest..even if you do go off and do your own thing, you still need the grinding to carry on....and all the planets become depressingly familiar. The game isnt all bad imo..but its not worth the price...£10-15 would be much fairer. The first 10 hours makes it worth that..no more. |

I'm enjoying NMS still and think I've got a reasonable amount of time to go before I get bored, but there are some gripes that are easy fixes. I do agree that this isn't really a full price £50 RRP game, but £10 would be too low. A £30-£35 RRP would have been much more suitable. Anyway, those gripes:
> The messages are annoying. "Life Support Low" at 75%... yeah that's not low is it. The whole protection stabilising thing too, every time you go into cover... I don't need to hear that every time when I'm walking through a tunnel with gaps in the roof or something. > Landing is a bit hit & miss when it goes essentially directly down but you can't look directly down - so you're having to guess where it's going. Much better would be two clicks; one to engage landing gear, which brings out a visible target on the ground to where you would land, then a second click to accept. It's a bit of a pain usually but a lot of a pain when you're trying to land by a beacon/on a landing pad so you don't have to use up launch thrusters when taking off again. > Labels seem to come and go rather randomly. Scanning sometimes will bring up un-visited places, sometimes not, sometimes known locations, sometimes not... also if there was a scanned location on one planet that I've not visited yet, I don't want it still showing on my HUD when I've left and gone to another planet a few million miles away... > Certain items like upgrades and tech being stuck in one place on inventory, others being movable. Especially when it seems that it does matter where you put upgrades (i.e. stack them next to the thing you're upgrading for bonus efficacy). > Lack of any kind of map... or at least the ability to mark waypoints on the HUD. I can understand why they don't have a map but a waypoint would be most helpful when you want to return to a place. For example, you meet an alien that wants Platinum, you go off to find Platinum, you try to return... no idea how to get back. Same goes for terrestrial trade points; they're quite few & far between so it would be most helpful to be able to mark one on your HUD that you can return to. ANYWAY I still enjoy the game it's just minor things like that which are going to make me abandon the game soon. |

Is there anything I can do to make it easier? This "flying creature scan" issue was resolved in patch 1.0.7, but due to the previous issue I'd given up on species scanning altogether. All my other journey milestones are 10s and 9s apart from species - still on 1. |

I was finding it impossible to scan the flying species, but apparently all you need to do is shoot one down and scan the dead bird, pterodactyl or whatever.

At 10 on most of my milestones apart from the extreme survival one which just seems to be stuck at 2.5 sols saying another 0.5 for the next level, but not sure what to do. Spent hours wandering around extreme planets and it's not going up. |

That was several patches ago though, so... |

As long as you're on an extreme planet the counter goes up, it stops if you are in your ship. The problem is that pre-patch 1.07 the counter reset if you left the planet (same as it does now if you die). So to advance beyond where you are stuck at you need to exceed your previous total before the counter will continue. Apparently now the counter will resume on any extreme planet you go to as long as you haven't died in the interim.

I remember seeing the interviews and reading about the game and thinking even back before release that it was extremely unlikely they'd get everything in place and working. They kept delaying it, but nothing finds those bugs and provides feedback better than getting something into the hands of users. You definitely need heatproof ears if you do that though. As we've seen, people really don't hold back! It's definitely a game that will evolve over time. The developers have always given the impression that this was always more than a product to them, so I'm hoping they'll keep working away at it for a while yet. I doubt it was ever their intent to disappoint the people who were looking forward to it. I just hope they don't get too demoralised by the reception from the always much louder negative people and keep at it. |

Anyway, was innocently minding my own business this afternoon, blasting asteroids for Thamium9; and some cheeky pirate geezer tries to spoil it all by attacking me. Heavens! The battle didn't last long.... But who won?! This game's superb. I normally loath frenetic battles, but in NMS they're almost serene things of beauty. Especially with a beautiful planet as a backdrop. |

1.08 update landed yesterday. No detailed patch notes, just 'bug fixes'. As mentioned above I'm liking, and apart from two crashes (of the PS4 kind) in forty hours or so, it's running sweet.

Does dying reset the counter? May explain why i'm still at level 1 for that achievement.
I haven't actually found any Extreme planets for ages though |

I tend to take my time with games, consequently after around forty hours I'm still alternating my exploration within just three very 'local' systems. It was quite a surprise therefore when visiting system 'Glostonmaa' that one of it's five planets, namely 'Lelinfen Utnik' had been discovered by a certain 'juanitoush' - Not sure what the odds are on hitting a discovered planet, particularly with my relatively light travels, but pretty cool moment nonetheless. |

I think my third star system was the first "already discovered", then my fourth... possibly my fifth? Anyway it was enough for me to be slightly surprised again when the next was undiscovered.

This must be being traded in like hotcakes - CEX are only offering £11 cash (or £20 voucher), yet selling it for £45. A week ago you could still get a £36 voucher for it!

Used the credit plus £6 to get Lego Star Wars Force awakens and Lego Avengers which are far more entertaining and holding their price better too! |

I traded it in a few weeks ago for £40 voucher. I was watching the stock levels go up by 300-400 a day! I thought it better to get better credit now, before it dropped. I intend to get it again when it's dirt cheap. Not worth more than £15 IMO. However, I am glad I did! I wonder how long the selling price will hold? I am expecting a drop to about £20-25 before end of the month!
Used the credit plus £6 to get Lego Star Wars Force awakens and Lego Avengers which are far more entertaining and holding their price better too! Regardless of how well a game sells, within a month the price is almost always down to around £35. Only notable exception I can think of is GTA V. |
