Looks like there is an update next week:
http://www.no-mans-sky.com/news/ Talks about base building. I'm filing under remain sceptical but happy to be surprised. I'm cursing this game at the moment because I can't quite stop playing it. I'm stuck on a planet at the moment looking for 20 zinc to repair my launch thruster on my new ship but i'll be buggered if i can find any, but I keep going back to it - most likely this time because I thought you could somehow easily find black holes in free exploration mode in the galaxy map. But you can't

Apparently it isn't going to contain base building, but just the "foundations" of base building.

But you can't ![]() Mind you, I can beat your cursings of the game ![]() I had to format my PS4 recently which meant that all the game data, game saves etc were wiped. I assumed that all my game data was automatically uploaded to my PS Plus account in the cloud. You can imagine my joy when I re-installed No Man's Sky and discovered that all my progress had gone. I can't remember how many hours worth but I'd certainly spent a lot on a new ship. I emailed Hello Games who were kind enough to reply but, unfortunately, no game save. Lesson: Always upload your game save to PS Plus or on to a USB stick. Oh well, Christmas is coming up so I can start all over again

Update is out - over 2GB in size. Full patch notes are on website but the main changes are:
Base Building Freighter Owning Three game mode choices - normal, creative and survival Changes to terrain algorithms should see a wider variety of planets |

![]() To give you an idea of how far i've walked on this planet to find some zinc, I turned around to see where my ship marker was and it was 35 minutes away. Then, rather bizarrely, i actually stumbled upon another crashed ship which i took. Still can't find any f***ing zinc though ! Quote:

I've had that happen to me a few times, although considering the amount of grinding you probably had to do on NMS, it must sting just a little more !

Maybe the idea is that you can fly around in your freighter and load up with stuff before bringing it back to your base ? In terms of your zinc problem, presumably the easiest thing to do would be to buy some? Every planet will have several alien outposts, and I'd say it's pretty likely they will have zinc for sale

Yes, in relation to the Freighter it seems as though you can't fly it yourself but it is indeed fully capable of interstellar transport and, also, storage. The logic behind base building seems to be more like leaving a marker on a planet so as someone else can come along and find it, while a freighter functions more like a portable base.

I've found a shelter with a scanning beacon though i'm going to see what that comes up with. |

To be honest with you, while it's frustrating, I've often found my most memorable NMS experiences have been when stranded and forced to wander around on foot - to the extent I do it whenever possible now
![]() One time got caught on an extremely toxic planet with sentinel hostility set to max. That was the banter... ![]() ![]() After a total of 5 days wandering, I literally randomly turned a corner and found a clearing with a galactic trade terminal just floating there. Lo and behold it had just enough zinc!. What made this whole 'expedition' even more annoying is that the planet is absolutely teeming with gravitino balls which are rare and very valuable. You get an elite sentinel team after you each time you grab one, so of course I had to grab six .. In much better shape now that i've repaired the bulk of the ship and can actually fly around now. I'm going to upgrade by multi-tool and go back down to the planet and hoover up some more gravitino balls. Should get me a fair few amount of units in no time at all. And still I can't stop playing it

Been playing the update for a few days now and it's pretty good, although i don't really think i've scratched the surface on it to be fair.
I've established a base but it's a bit of a faff to actually get any good technology going because you need (surprise surprise) more elements. Found a freighter and made an offer on it, but the 7.5m asking price was a tad out of my price range, considering i've only got about 500k credits

Wow 7.5m... I've barely spent any of my money and only have 2m...
Guess I'll either have to start playing it regularly again or go to exploration mode!!! |

I avoided NMS after the scandal following its release, but I wonder if it'll be one of these games which over time, with more updates and tweaks... becomes actually quite good.
I might buy it 2nd hand with the hope that in a few months it will build up to what it was intended to be. |

I've decided to finally buy it. It's currently £14.99 (used) on GAMES' website

Me too got it down to £10 with reward points, it's surely worth a punt for a tenner.

You might play it and hate it, but you might be like me and play it and just get completely immersed in the bloody thing.
I actually know how it ends as i've seen the video, so I know it's ultimately pointless to keep at it as much as I do, but I can't bloody tear myself away ![]() I suppose at the moment i'm trying to get things going at the base so i can start earning money to buy a freighter. You can also change the colour on your base parts as well which is rather cool - obviously i've gone for all black. |

I haven't played this in a couple of months now but the Foundation update does sound like it's the start of positive changes for the game, even though I was one of the few that did actually enjoy the game to start with.
I tend to do most of my gaming on the PC nowadays, so decided to buy it again last night on Steam - 40% discount at the moment, I'm happy with that. |

The thing is that none of the updates will ever solve the criticism that there just isn't any story. The game is still very much creatively and imaginatively driven and no matter how many updates they release, I doubt they will ever release one that turns NMS into a linear experience.

It's probably me being weird, but it's strangely relaxing sitting in the cockpit of your ship on a planet with a severe storm outside and listening to the rain batter on the glass

Nothing seems to be stackable for me after the update, is that just in certain places like the freighter and your base?

At heart it's really just "Find element X to craft/recharge/upgrade item Y so you can earn Z units" I'm finding that all i'm doing at the moment is continually crafting warp cells and using them and not much else other than occasionally upgrading my ship. so why can't i put the bloody thing down ?
