The very first guy to get his hands on the game got to the centre of the universe in about 15 hours, because he was gunning for it non-stop and not actually exploring the various planets. Obviously 15 hours is still a lot quicker than the actual amount of time the devs said it'd take for us to get to the centre of the universe, but as you say, these are essentially review copies. In fact, the guy even mentions there's 1 item that essentially speeds you up an incredible amount to help you travel to the centre of the universe a lot quicker.

My theory is that this item which helps you reach the centre of the universe quickly is exclusive to pre-release copies for reviewers, and there will be a day 1 patch that will get rid of this item, making it a lot longer for the rest of us to get to the centre. I think the devs had to put something in there so reviewers could get to the centre of the universe and factor that element of the game into their review - which they had to have done really, otherwise it's not really a full review.
The first guy who played got to the centre of his "starting galaxy" quite quickly. There are rumours you then go to another galaxy and another so getting to the centre of the universe itself could still take a lot of time.

Having seen some footage to me it looks as if when you pick a planet and fly towards it you're on rails and sort of loaded into it if that makes sense. They blur the screen to hide this in a way. If so.. this makes me wonder if you're actually flying around a huge universe at all or if you're effectively jumping between planets with a sort of holding lobby in between. Sort of like entering a portal in Minecraft.. you step in.. the screen wobbles a lot and then you're in a new world. i wonder if NMS is a bit like that. I'm curious.

It's not critical if it IS like that because the argument is well that's the best way to simulate the experience and to allow you to rapidly explore. Which is a fair point. But interesting all the same.

I might be wrong however. It's difficult to judge from the video I've seen if the player was in full control of the ship when leaving/entering orbits.
Doesn't look like that to me, think you'll be able to fly to any part of the planet you like and it's confirmed in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGXDCV9HiZ4 (2 minutes, 15 seconds into it)

I’m completely done with this game and I have cancelled my pre-order which I ordered on Day 1 of pre-orders going live on PSN.

I originally booked time off work to play it on the original release date, then spent an entire week doing nothing because it was delayed. I didn’t complain.

Now with 3 days to go, I see that people who pre-ordered physical copies have received theirs in the post and can spend the entire weekend playing the game whilst we have to wait until Wednesday for the privilege of a download.

I can just sit and watch people streaming it early.

The whole launch of this game has been a complete pile of toss so I’m voting with my wallet.

I’m never going to play it.

It's common for hard copies to be posted early, they're not suppose to and it doesn't always happen but it's a bonus if it does and it's the good side of pre ordering a physical copy rather than digital.

But it will be pointless playing it now anyway as the servers will be reset by the end of the weekend.

Well it is nice to know you are not over-reacting to something that happens to every game launch these days.

Same happened with Dark Souls 3 for me but I still played it.

I think the phrase is biting off your nose to spite your face.

Except you are. You don't just book time off work for a game and then go "Actually now I'm NEVER going to play it because some people who aren't me got to play it before I did", that's ridiculously pathetic and self-absorbed. I mean, by all means, if you aren't interested in a game, don't buy it. But seeing as you clearly *are* interested in this game, that just sounds like a massive knee jerk reaction. People got the game early. Boo hoo. Get over it.

Oh and if it helps ease you at all, Hello Games are wiping the servers before the official release, but you do you I suppose...

Don't be so hasty. Everything isn't quite so rosy for people playing it early.

The developer behind No Man's Sky has said, "If you are reviewing/playing our game without our update, on a leaked copy, then please don't. It's not what players will experience."

Sony have added - "Hello Games has a tremendous vision for No Man’s Sky. Sony Interactive Entertainment understands that some users may have obtained early copies of the game and the only reason we have not sent out review copies yet is due to a significant pre-release patch currently scheduled for Monday, August 8. No Man’s Sky is an ambitious game and the patch is a culmination of the studio’s day-1 aspirations.
Sending out early copies of the game prior to the patch would not be a fair depiction of the game as it’s intended for consumers. For those users who have obtained early copies of No Man’s Sky, their save progress will not carry over to the final game after the universe has been regenerated for launch
."

So not only are those people currently playing an unfinished version of the game, their progress will be reset next week anyway.

My pre-order arrived today and I've put about 6 hours into it before hearing that it's all for nothing because the servers are going to be wiped, which woudn't be a big issue for me in itself, but apparently my saved game won't work either so I'd have to start it all from scratch again.

Not happy with this, my game was legitimately ordered and paid for and games get posted out before the official release date all the time so I don't know what's so special about this one - it's basically a single player randomly generated experience so it's not as if there's any advantage to be had over other players by playing it a bit early anyway.

I doubt that this supposed day 1 update changes much in the core game anyway, and as it went gold a month ago maybe they should have waited another month and released the game in a finished state. From what I've seen so far, it's unlikely that they'll be able to make it any less repetitive and boring once you've done basically the exact same thing on every planet you visit..

The game definitely seems to attract people who have a tendency to overreact. It's like the ISIS of games.

What's this doing hidden away in the playstation forum? Shouldn't it be in general gaming? It started off life as a pc game.

It was originally announced at the Playstation 2014 E3 conference, and the PC version wasn't revealed until later.

The prototype was shown on December 7th 2013 at the Spike VGX awards, E3 wasn't until June 2014, 6 months later.

A few quotes from the comments

This game looks incredible. I really hope it comes to the PS4.
Shahid Ahmad is already in talks with them to bring this to ps4.
I'm just saying, shouldn't multiplatform games be in the general gaming forum? I probably would have been talking about this game if I knew the thread was here

Here's what's in the first No Man's Sky update. It'll be available for everybody on launch

Servers will be wiped on Sunday and again Monday in the lead up to launch.

Beware these notes contain some spoilers. Here are some things our little team has been up to over the last four or five weeks:

(As it says it may contain spoilers I'll put them in a tag, although I don't think they're spoilers)

Spoiler

I grew up reading Carmack’s .plan files for Quake, so it’s fun to be writing one of my own

Next up we’re adding the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters. Temporal AA and my new cloud rendering tech should be coming soon too. It will really change the game again, and enhance it visually.

This universe we’ve built is a pretty large canvas, we’ve got a lot of ideas. This is the type of game we want to be

Yeah seems so from this:

Interestingly the game can't seem to work out if the planet is blue/dark or orange/light.

The Day 1 update seems great! Should put paid to those more entitled among us who demand they be among the first to experience the game as it should be experienced.

It’s a Day 0 patch, not a magic spell.

This game will be £3.95 on Steam by December, but I reckon Sony will hold out as long as possible before they discount it.
