Thankyou for that, the manual says it supports MKV playback, and with it being a small form factor I can have it high up, which will be easier to reach than the back of my TV (I am in a wheelchair) so I am going to take a punt!

I've only had a brief look at the feature and I thought the files were only m2ts?

It is mis-described. It is NOT a Freeview box. It is a generic DVB-T2 HD box. No BBC red button, no MHEG, no digital tick.

It records and plays back in .mts but can also play .mkv, .avi, etc transferred from another device.

August is a badge for various Chinese gear, rather like Sumvision etc.

I recognise this box... they are available from various Chinese sellers on AliExpress for around £20, so the above price is pretty good for a UK seller.

It's an MStar7816 chipset, and they perform well enough (compatibility with mkv, avi etc is good). What I have noticed though is that the picture tends to go black for a second periodically, and it is unable to read the DVB-S2 EPG as it's encrypted.

As a device for recording DVB-S2 for saving to disk, however, they do the job.

I've not had that problem myself although I have had other problems. The timer on mine for example is extremely temperamental and sometimes refuses to come out of standby mode when a recording is due.

Still, for less than £24 (delivered) I can hardly complain. It is outstandingly good as a media player and will even play flash videos downloaded from the internet and transferred to the player on a USB stick.

Why would a Freeview box be able to do anything with a satellite source ?
