Bad mistake not bringing in Cole.”

The guy had absolutely no protection in the first half though. That's just a function of the formation we play. I don't think Cole would have found life much easier out there.

We're looking for individual scapegoats - but I think the loss was really a tactical & team one.

The heat has got to Roy.

Praising Rooney and Gerrard.

Oh dear.

I think based on tonight's performance we're going to beat Uruguay and Costa Rica.

It's not. Money's irrelevant.

Good performance from Roy's side tonight.
Still plenty to play for.
I think this is a side that will do so well in France Euro 2016 .

If Italy and Costa Rica draw then the loser of Uruguay v England will go out - and if it's a draw then it's going to be a push.

They play the day after us so we could be waiting to be put out of our misery.

I agree, the younger players were exciting and a breath of fresh air, even though we lost i have come away from tonights game with more hope than the 0-0 draw against Algeria

that would be the cheekiest way to qualify out of the group stages

Why does he seem to struggle then, I don't get it!

39 goals in qualifying & not one in a World Cup tournament - I don't get it!

How longs the Ox reportedly supposed to be out for?

That game was lost because of inept management.

Henderson and Gerrard both looked out of their depth and needed help in midfield as Pirlo and co. were simply running through them. And sadly, Italy were there for the taking.

As for Rooney, he was pony. If you're not going to play him up front, then don't play him at all. He was a passenger most of the game.

Full backs need sorting out aswell, Baines needed more cover and Johnsons selection is based on the fact that there is no one else. Eventually the fans and the media will turn on Hodgson, this whole "He's alright because he's English" approach soon wears off.

Decent set of players, poor manager. I'd have thought his dismal track record would have sent alarm bells ringing.

He can hardly criticise players in public. Stuff like that is best left behind closed doors.

He did it plenty of times at Anfield!

gotta agree with most of that as well

easy for England fans to get carried away with the positives of the front 4 but playing that lineup led to the team being exposed elsewhere

They've got two more games to come in the space of a week. What do you want him to do? Slag them off and cause a massive rupture in the group, just cause it makes you feel better?

He's best off parrying away those questions as he did, and addressing things in private.

I still think Cole would have done better with the formation we played. Baines literally needs an winger to be effective. Cole can handle himself better imo.

I ultimately blame Hodgson for the whole mess.

Yes, and when he played a defensive set up last time against Italy, everyone stated there was no ambition.

I'd rather watch that England today and lose than the turgid defensive rubbish that's been served up for the last decade and more.

Hodgson's seen us through massive changes in the squad and we have improved. He's doing alright.

How many defensive midfielders should we have played? Henderson and Gerrard should have been capable of holding their own. The fact they didn't says more about them than the tactics.

He was good enough to make the goal from the left. It's a pity he woke up only once in 90 minutes.

Well Johnson's selection is hardly Hodgson's fault then.

As for Baines - that's the risk of playing the 4-2-3-1. Welbeck fell asleep and allowed the ball to go forward when he should have closed the space down. No, he isn't a defender but attacking midfielders have to help the defence out as much as everyone else.

The big game players were dire tonight and not just because of the tactics. The youngsters were brilliant, we looked good going forward and it was the best we've played since... probably the days of Hoddle.
