We're moving to a new house that has appalling broadband speed and no Virgin so I'm looking at 3networks sim only deal with unlimited data and tethering. It's got to be used via an actual 4G phone and then create a hotspot in the house. Any advice please regarding what sort of router etc would be gratefully received!

Why would you think you need a router for a hotspot?

Because I was told it would help with the range of the wifi in the house???

Who told you you could send a 4g signal through a router? The phone itself is what other devices connect to. I've never heard of a router you can send a 4g or any mobile phone signal through.

Also bare in mind the three unlimited tethering is not technically a home broadband replacement and you may get throttled.

I did think that also and asked 3 about it, they said they only throttle evenings when P2P, file sharing etc and not things like netflix. We shall have to wait and see and as I told the assistant what I proposed to be using it for, I should expect to be able to get out of the contract if it doesn't work satisfactorily!

The router is picking up the transmitted wifi not the 4G signal!

I tethered for 18 months as my flat doesn't have cable or a phone line. The connection isn't as reliable as a broadband WiFi but its good enough.

he could use a wifi networking bridge and then pump the internet around his house by hardwire or use another wifi router as a wifi booster

Did you just use the phone without any router/booster??

yeh I did. I wasn't aware you could use a router with a mobile signal. I only had a good connection on the top floor of my duplex. Unfortunately the building penetration isn't awfully good on Three so I couldn't get a decent connection downstairs where some of my rooms are.

I've since had a phone line put in.

A wireless bridge is a hardware component used to connect two or more network segments (LANs or parts of a LAN) which are physically and logically (by protocol) separated

somthing like this will do the job fine

I use one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edimax-CV-74...=edimax+bridge

The routing and NAT is done by the phone. These bridges can be a little fiddly to set up but basically they connect to the phone hotspot and then connect to an Ethernet network. Mine is cabled to a 8 port switch. My work PC's are connected to this via Ethernet but I also have a WiFi access point connected to one of the ports giving me a stronger WiFi signal.

Isn't there a limit placed on the amount of tethering on new contracts with Three ?>

I can guarantee they throttle normal browsing, netflix you tube etc.

Normally it is when A the network is under strain, or B when you have used a lot over the previous day/days.

I have had a speedtest of 0.2 download several times!

The sim only one plan isn't affected by the recent changes.
