Back in the day... well 1995 to be precise... Derek Wilton (RIP) had a Gnome which used to disappear and go on trips all over the world sending back postcards...

A bit like Phelan today with that Taaaart...

The said Gnome was called Arthur...
Derek then received a severed gnome’s ear with a ransom note for fifty chocolate doubloons so he lay in wait for the criminal behind some bushes and was arrested on suspicion of being a peeping Tom...

All highly hilarious... I'm sure you'll agree...

However I always thought it was Des Barnes who was playing the prank on poor Derek until I stumbled upon this gem...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4Glk_S2SuE

It's only 5:57 long but if you want to start it where Derek finds out the truth then scroll to 3:38...

I remember that! Classic!
Just watched it Charley. Derek was like a refugee from a bad sitcom. He was funny though!

That's so funny. Thought Derek was going to brain Norris with the gnome.

Seems longer ago but from Corriepedia
"This storyline makes most Corrie fans groan but Derek's gnome was more than a mere garden ornament. Oh yes, verily, it was indeed a pawn in the game of jealously and bitterness between Derek, Mavis and Norris back in 1995"

It was a brilliant storyline, wish they would do more like that nowadays. How about Phelan steals Anna's new garden gnome and takes it around the world sending postcards signed from it to mock her further?

I loved that storyline at the time and it still makes me laugh thinking about it. (Bare in mind I was 11 at the time).

Far more entertaining than the rubbish we are getting now. If it happened now under Blackburn Derek and Norris would probably be having an affair or a threesome involving Arthur the Gnome.

For me that was Corrie at it's worst. It seemed at that point as if the show had become too comfortable. I remember when the 35th anniversary book came out, around this time, and there was statement in it that Corrie was like an old auntie, or words to that effect, that had lost the spring in it's step but was loved etc. I felt the show became so boring around that time. It wouldn't be long until Brian Park became producer and Derek was axed. I remember being pleased when I read that he was to be written out of the series. I felt he became an awful character. It was a shame we lost Mavis to be really the show didn't feel the loss long term. Corrie had become too middle class by this point and although Park shook the show up he did take it back to being more about a working class community.

Corrie was awfully naff in the mid 90s. No edge. Lots of bumbling comedy characters. Brookside was really riding the crest of a wave at the time, and Eastenders was putting out some of its strongest stuff, while Coronation Street was very "minor". The "gnome" storyline says it all, really. Killing off Derek in his paperclip-car underlined the poor quality of the storylines and characterisation.

I think the gnome storyline has been blown out of proportion over the years. It was really just a minor comedy storyline and one which was very typical of the Wiltons, who were two well-loved longstanding characters who weren't meant to be taken seriously. The show did lack drama at that time but the problem wasn't with Derek and Mavis, who were the same as they'd ever been. Characters of their ilk have always been the bread and butter of Coronation Street, and really, once they were gone, Norris just became the two of them amalgamated anyway. No, Corrie at its worst is garbage like Molly and Kevin's affair, Joe's painkiller addiction, the racism story from last year, Jim's bank robbery, Graeme and Xin, or the Windass baby surrogacy.
