Hi there,

I have a Galaxy S5 and have never bothered with the emoticons in the default SMS as I thought I may get charged for them by my network (Three), but have always used the SwiftKey ones, as I've noticed it just puts it in characters.

I've just updated my SwiftKey keyboard and it now seems to have changed them to the same type of thing (the emoticons that you get when you hold the ENTER key down on the right of the keyboard).

I was wondering if you would get charged for these by your network, or if I was correct about getting charged for the ones in the default SMS program (ones on the left where you enter the text)?

Cheers Mark.

I have an S5 too and haven't been charged any extra for messages when I've used the emoticons. I'm on Three and have unlimited texts.

Just wondering which emoticons you use and also does it insert them as the actual emoticon like or does it just show like :- ) ?

Cheers.

Well you won't get charged for sending emoticons in an SMS as I do that all the time on Three and they've never charged me for it. What you will get charged for is sending an MMS. What I noticed is, with the stock Samsung messaging app, for some stupid reason it converts messages with emoticons into MMS. I'm using Hangouts for SMS now and it doesn't convert them.

Thanks for the reply.

I was wondering how you know if it's a graphics and not just a set of characters the emoticon is made up of as some people are getting charged as an MMS?

I did manage to open the link to the Three site below yesterday but it does not seem to work this morning for me (says some smily faces in messages you can get charged for an MMS instead of a SMS)?

There is no chargeable emoticon as long as it's sending through SMS, none of them are actual graphics. It's just down to Samsungs messaging app. It should tell you when it's converting an SMS into an MMS, but there is a way to stop this conversion if you have a rooted phone, you can use the xposed framework and a module called wanam xposed.

Thanks for the replies.

I was just concerned when I read the below from the Three website that I can now get onto.

Not sure if there is anyway to disable MMS on the S5 or blocked with Three?

You have 2 options if it's converting to MMS.

1. Root the phone, install xposed and wanam xposed and disable mms conversion in the wanam app.

2. Use a different messaging app, I'm using Hangouts and it's never converted to MMS even if I use loads of emojis.

Just had a look in the message settings on my S5 to just make sure there is anything to disable them and there is not, but I did notice there was a setting to alert you if the message changes to a MMS and that was not ticked by default so have turned that on.

Start inputting emojis into a new message and see if it tells you it's converting to MMS.

You dont send an emoji so you wont get charged for it, when you send an emoji all you are spending its a text smiley and your phone just displays the relevant emoji

I've heard sometimes they are sent as a graphic and not actually a set of characters which is then shown as I smiley at the other end though.

Its different if you actually enter the charterers yourself as then you will know they are only charterers.
