He's not great but he;s not worse than Owen.
I pray that he never darkens a commentary booth ever again. He'll be doing the voice over for a Prozac advert soon. |

I felt he was reading half his lines from some sort of premeditated script as what he was saying had no bearing on what we were viewing at the time.
You would think that the broadcasters give some sort of media coaching to their team but obviously they didn't bother with Phil - seems almost impossible he managed to get the gig for the Beeb's biggest game of the year. |

First time ever I recall muting the tv and putting on music, I felt sick listening to him.

He was terrible. Robotic, dull, unenthusiastic and he was getting on my nerves. What the hell were the BBC playing at putting him on such a key game. Stick him on when there's a low key game at 2 in the morning if you have to have him commentating but not when people are watching. He really helped to ruin the match.

I thought he was dreadful. I kept shouting at him to "shut up"
The trouble is, if you mute the TV, you lose the atmospherical sounds of the crowd and I don't see why I should have to mute the BBC because they have recruited a commentator who, though undoubtedly knowledgable, has the most boring delivery I've ever heard. Rant over!! |

He obviously hasn't done a lot of commentary before and it was quite a big ask to give him such a massive match.
So I'm guessing he may have been just a little nervous -he certainly got better as the game went on- and I'm sure will improve as he gets more games under his belt. However the DS Hang 'em and Flog 'em brigade will probably have him dropped into the middle of the Amazon with Wayne Rooney rather than actually giving him a fair go.. |

Didn't really notice him; in a good or bad way. Tyldesley on the other hand....

I know what you're saying but in most occupations you have to prove that you're at least half capable of doing a good job before you are awarded a plum job. Why should football commentating be any different?

I've got to agree. A strange choice seeing as the Nevilles are not exactly renowned for their charisma. Danny Murphy was much better.

First up, I don't think he's worse than Lawrenson and no-one's worse than Owen.
But he jabbered on a bit much for me which irritated me. And someone tell him Pirlo's first name is Andrea, not Andreas. If someone just asks him not to talk quite so much, he may end up being bearable. Maybe. |

I actually don't mind Lawrenson as a co-commentator - it's when he's in the pundit chair I don't like him.
Neville has one of those monotone voices and he simply talks too much. Perhaps he'd be better in the studio where he's asked direct questions? He has a lot of football knowledge but he needs to be more concise. Not sure if Italy v England was the right time to unleash him on the public though... |

The content of what he said wasn't too bad. The problem is how is said it. And how much.
A good sports commentator knows when to shut up and let the action speak for itself. |

The problem is that the public are far too used to hysteria.
Intelligent comments that allow for some personal analysis are such a rarity we end up at this thread. Give him a chance and maybe the intelligence of the listener might be allowed to improve, for once. Is that such a rarity in the 'telling us what we think' tabloid like world? Is it the same reason not too many listen to Radio 4, in that Radio 4 requires the listener to think too? |

Is he on commision for how many times he says 'one on one'!
And yes, I was wondering if Neville Jr. was being paid by the word. After ten minutes I was begging him out loud to shut up. I swear he talked more than Guy Mowbray, and generally just vagueries such as "England will need to maintain discipline." Someone should remind him that he's the CO-commentator. |

He was awful. I suppose you could tell him "don't give up your day job" but has he actually got one now....??

Get it right - it's "one VEE one". You've really got to hit that "vee".
