The problem is that the public are far too used to hysteria.

Intelligent comments that allow for some personal analysis are such a rarity we end up at this thread. Give him a chance and maybe the intelligence of the listener might be allowed to improve, for once.

Is that such a rarity in the 'telling us what we think' tabloid like world?
Is it the same reason not too many listen to Radio 4, in that Radio 4 requires the listener to think too?
TBF - I doubt many tuned into this football game hoping to leave enlightened after 90 minutes. His job was to keep things ticking over and offer a bit of insight and let's face it he failed quite miserably on both counts.

He's absolutely dire . Talking in that boring, staccato, monotone voice .

The BBC don't need to pick ex England players as pundits . The main job being on telly is to communicate .

Mark Lawrenson and Andy Townsend do an excellent job

I can't believe how many times I said that before I pressed the mute button. In all my years of watching football I've never heard such a dire commentator.I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought the same!

Andy Townsend is terrible.

Neville wasn't great but think he'll improve.

I like Keown, think he's doing a good job on the France game.

At least the computer is near to the TV so in future I can access 5-live online for the commentary with the TV sound muted.

It was dire, hopefully someone at the Beeb with authority to change things was watching!

I thought they already gave a choice of audio via the red button?

Really don't think he was adding much in the way of intelligent comments.

His emphasis upon the fact that England had plenty of time to be score and so play patiently - even when there were 2 minutes + injury time left was certainly not intelligent

Alistair McGowan with his views on Phil Neville along with those of Gary Lineker, Adrian Chiles, Roy Hodgson and William Hague.

He was better in this evenings game on the BBC half time analysis panel. It's the live commentary he is not suited to. The BBC were defending him today and said he will be doing further games. They also said he has been trained.

Give him time.

The problem is that listeners are too used to semi=hysteria. Getting somewhere towards the middle he will be improve your experience. I quite doubt he can end up worse than Andy Townsend and his cynical defence of what I usually see as cheating.

We put up with far worse.

Speaking of semi-hysteria, I think the reaction to Neville was OTT. Same with Chiles. He's not great and pretty annoying but you'd think he was Stalin based on the sheer volume of criticism he receives. I think people clget carried away with hysteria on Twitter and lose any sense of perspective.

It's good that people made official complaints to the BBC, because now we have records of who should have their right to vote revoked. Or breathe.

The one thing Phil Neville must get credit for is the way he's taken the criticism on the chin, treated it with the pinch of salt that all Twitter criticism should be taken with and said he'll use it to inspire him to improve his performance.

He couldn't have handled it better in my opinion.

Someone described Neville as "human morse code" and I would rather listen to a ninety minute recording of an Ian Duncan Smith speech than listen to him again. But complain? Nahhh. He was just a scapegoat for England losing. But the question is do the beeb play him in his natural position of studio pundit or drop him altogether........

He was pretty bad, but nowhere near as bad as Lawrenson. He's the worst commentator about at the moment. All he does is moan and doesn't commentate on the actual game.

Like his brother then.

To be honest I think he's better than who they have on offer tonight in the commentary box

All fair points, though on this occasion the criticism was correct IMO, I thought he was awful. But if it makes him improve, it's all good, so, yeah I agree.
