I really don't see (or hear) the issue with his commentary. Seems like people are acting hysterically.

Phil Neville has responded with good grace to criticism, has contributed in his commentary this evening more sparingly and with a more animated voice. A significant improvement from someone who refreshingly does not assume his audience have marshmallows for brains..

Some people just don't have it. Phil Neville just doesn't have it - you can't force your voice not to be boring and monotonous it's too obvious

Like the poster who claimed Neville had already 'ruined' the game tonight 3 minutes into the match?

His commentary is only really a problem when he goes into what he believes is 'commentator mode'. Even in the England vs Italy game he was ok in the rare parts he relaxed and spoke more naturally.

There's been less of this commentator mode in each of the games he has done and tonight's there's certainly been a lack of it which is a good thing.

Think the problem overall was simply BBC trying to rush him into the role. Sky didn't push Gary into commentary immediately, they let him find his broadcasting feet in a pundit role first. If BBC had given him more time as a pundit first and then perhaps a lesser match than England's first then the backlash may not have been as bad

I'm not a hugely frequently visitor to the football section but I'm pretty sure he's a known troll.

Or a man with incredibly sensitive ears.

His problem is he seems to make everything he says last about two seconds,as if that's how he's been told to do it.

^This.

He's fine as a pundit, but when he's commentating he tends to go into this rhythmic speech saying one short sentence after another which gets quite tedious.

Also he needs to remember that he's only a co-commentator. His role should be to add interesting asides and views when prompted by the main commentator but sometimes it seems like he takes over from the main guy.

Isn't that the problem with most co-commentators?
