I think it's worth considering that the commentator as well as everyone crowd at the game are not watching the game on nicely zoomed-in video on a telly in their front room. They saw a goal been given followed by a replay with the caption "No Goal".

Of all the games I've seen in the WC so far this is the first where GLT has been used to confirm a goal and how did FIFA's presentation do it? By saying "No Goal" then many seconds later saying "Goal". Next time (like in cricket) the crowd and commentators will be more patient for the whole situation to play out, I think they can be excused for the confusion the first time it was used.

I don't think anyone will be shedding any tears at the imminent exit of Honduras. They've made few friends in the warm up game v England or tonight v France.

Some of the challenges made by the Hondurans reminded me of Cameroon v Argentina back in Italia '90. No interest in going for the ball, just taking out the man.

It did need to be shown, and it's not bewildering that it was. Had that gone in, it would have been a Benzema goal, not an own goal, so they had to confirm that his original effort hadn't crossed the line for them to then be able to move on to the second phase and show that the keeper had knocked it over the line.

Nobody thought the ball had crossed the line at that point, so it wasn't necessary. If it's an automated part of how the software works than fine, but it certainly wasn't needed, it gave roughly the same revelation as when they used it show one of Brazil's goals that hit the back of the net had gone in.

Just because nobody thought it had (I'm not sure you can say nobody thought it had - I wasn't sure myself) they still had to clarify it, so I do think it was necessary. It clarified that Benzema's original effort had not crossed the line, so it then moved on to the next phase, and showed that the keeper had scored an own goal. It wasn't the same as that situation at all. The situation you mention didn't need anything clarifying, this situation did. Had Benzema's original effort been over the line and they hadn't checked it, it would have wrongly gone down as own goal against the keeper.
