I hate this cliché that Messi needs this World Cup to 'prove himself.' He has nothing to prove to anyone. Look at his goal scoring record and what he's won. He's already in the pantheon of greats.
I agree. Take George Best as an example . He is considered one of the all time greats and he never even played in a World Cup Finals.

Noooo.. don't say that - I've been looking forward to this all weekend!

It better live up to expectations!
I'm sure it will - I hope it will - but sod's law and all that.

I think this is one of those cases where the media creates a narrative for themselves and decide to stick to it no matter what.

Not even Bestie could succeed in getting the Northern Ireland team into the World Cup

I thought he basically fell out with the Argentina management. Like he does with everyone.

Even last week there was a thread on here asking opinions of would Best be regarded higher if he was English and played in the world cup.

Got Argentina in the sweep but come on Bosnia.

Really emotional piece on the BBC. Must be huge for the people of the war torn country

Of course, it's subjective but I don't think George Best is considered to be in the same category as Pele and Maradona by most people. No-one is.
