Luckily people within football don't seem as prone to knee-jerkery as those who watch.

Rooney is dropped for the Costa Rica game. Interesting.

'Rooney dropped' isn't really interesting when a team makes nine changes.

On all the Rooney Threads.

Digital Spy. Is a Entertainment forum, not a Footballing website, why fans take so much offence to us slagging a player off is beyond me.

He hasn't really entertained us through this tournament, people know what he is earning, some may think it doesn't match.

Then you have Helen and the Big Brother stuff.

At the end of the day history will show that over the course of three world cups his goal tally equalled his number of red cards.

Whether he's a world class player or not (I judge that on the basis of who would make a world eleven - and he wouldn't get close imo) his highlight reel on the world stage is sorely lacking.
Tim Cahill's highlight reel at world cup finals puts Rooneys to shame and Australia are arguably a much weaker team.

On another thread the other day I saw somebody say, if posters don't like what is being said about Rooney, go onto Football chat rooms, and have it out, as this isn't the place, for Rooney fans to get shirty, if there beloved Rooney is getting slagged off.

I really don't understand what point you're making, even before the reference to Big Brother.

You think Pele would be a legend if he scored loads of goals during the qualifying matches to reach a WC and then at the WC he manages to score 1 goal? Of course not. He'd be just another decent/good player. Pele has scored 12 goals at the WC. Rooney has scored 1 and it was right in front of the goal! He's failed to deliver at the WC time and time again. Heck, he's not even selected to play in today's game against Costa Rica so his grand total of WC goals will remain a mighty...

One.

So, because this is an 'entertainment forum', anyone who thinks that the criticism of Rooney is undeserved/over-the-top should bugger off, whereas anybody who wants to 'slag him off' is more than welcome?

Outstanding reasoning, and completely fair and balanced.

Even more hilarious, and arrogant, is the need to compare Rooney to arguably the best player to ever play football. England weren't expected to win anything during Rooney's time as a player, I'm sure Rooney will be happy with all his league trophies he's won, and champions league medal... and his 40 England goals so far.

This World Cup has surpassed itself, we get a dedicated football forum section all year round to discuss, fairly, all aspects of football, yet we mustn't expect the same with the World Cup, agree with the majority or go elsewhere? ridiculous.

This might be the worst thing you've ever posted.

He may be a good premiere club player, but he has NEVER played well for England, certainly not to live up to the media's expectations.
Rooney's last World Cup was dismal.. He was one of the worst players on the field so why do they keep picking this dud to play at international level - he's just not an international player.
Rooney was excellent at Euro 2004.

Rooney scored a goal and assisted the other - most players would be praised for that ahead of others who produced nothing.

and has dined out on it ever since.

Part of England's problem is that they forever look back at long past performances as opposed to current form

Unfortunately though he spends so much time tracking back out of position and chasing the game that the majority of defenders he's beating to the ball are our own

Having read several of your posts during the World Cup, I have to ask, are you supposed to be a parody account?

That can't be right, as smart people don't see that you have qualities outside the handful of threads every other summer.

I don't want to slag Rooney off, as on his day he can still be a class act.

I just get sad watching him now, because he's clearly lost his pace and strength, and he seems to need more time on the ball. The amount of times he got caught in possession in the WC games was a bit embarrassing to be honest.

It just must be down to lack of looking after himself over the years, or perhaps his foot injuries have nullified some of his prior strengths.

I do remember fondly the days when you would EXPECT Rooney to bulldoze his way past 2/3 defenders. He's just lost that ability now, and I cannot put my finger on why.
