Eamon Dunphy is a former footballer and an outstanding journalist.

Can only agree with the thread title and all the pro Tim vickery comments. Been loving his work on radio for years but he has been very much a hidden gem. Now having the same breakout star effect on the quality of punditry that Rodriguez has had on the quality of Colombia's play.

Yep, agree with everything said and I dislike most pundits and journalists and Vickery is brilliant.

When quite clearly put on the spot with questions he didnt know were coming, he can answer everything on Brazil in the 1958 and 1962 world cups before he was born, Brazil and Argentina in 78, 82 and 86 and all concerning Colombia in 94 - and keep it interesting.

Then you hear some of our hacks or pundits try to answer questions like that.

And one of the few english ex-pros and media men to see through the over-rated charlatan Venables. (I use the term "English" in the sense that he played most of his career in England),

Please stop. My nerves are bad enough as it is.

He's not a BBC journalist. He lives in Brazil and does a lot of broadcasting work there. He also writes for English language and Brazilian publications, so I doubt he'd have time to do much more for the BBC even if they wanted him.

I hope that Vickery will have a role in the BBC's coverage of the next World Cup. Obviously nothing like this one but there will still be 5 South American teams there for him to provide analysis of and he'd do that far better than anyone else they have.

True - I guess the tabloids boys are likely to talk as much trash as an ex footballer.

Some just turn a blind eye to anything outside of this country.

He will. He is too good not to be involved.

The sooner he steps in and Lawrenson steps out the better. He is a catty prick who knows football but chooses to be an arsehole.

I've noticed the BBC are using Lawrenson more sparingly than they have been during previous major tournaments. Are they finally getting the message and phasing him out?

I believe they are, I really do.

I hope so, because he is just impossible to listen to, sometimes. He used to be an insightful, knowledgeable commentator, but he's just turned into a prickly, cantankerous, sarcastic old git who sounds like he'd rather be somewhere else.

I'm sure he's got worse and worse. In his earlier days he sometimes came across as deadpan and dry, and actually quite amusing on occasions, but now he just sounds miserable all of the time I don't think he used to be as bad as he is now.

Great reporter. We the public deserve more of the quality like him on screen compared to the former players who spout dross most of the time.

I was quite surprised he was even there to be honest, he's been used far more than I would have thought. He was given a live quarter final and maybe he'll be used in the semis or even final.
