Hi guys - I thought I would come here as I know you are all as fanatical about EE as I am!

A work-friend of mine is laying into EastEnders (part of her daily rant about TV) and has come out with the gem that the Carol cancer storyline "has come too quickly after the last cancer story about 6 months ago."

Am I being totally stupid? I can't think who she is talking about? I know Peggy had it and then Tanya - but has there been any more recent storylines?!

She's now ranting about the Patrick storyline being
Spoiler
but I'm fighting that battle quite happily on my own!

I think it makes it more realistic because if only one person got cancer every year it wouldnt be realistic. And the Patrick storyline wont be too similar to Jim's IMO

That's one of my points of attack! I'm also trying to explain that it's not just about coming up with new plots all the time - it's sometimes about spreading awareness. If the soaps could save just one person's life by doing a cancer storyline - then that is great.

She doesn't seem to understand me!

I'm just stumped as to who she is talking about having had cancer in EE over the last 6 months (save for Carol)...! I don't want to ask her just yet. I don't want to give her the satisfaction!!

I made the mistake of asking her that! She told me she only watches EastEnders.

I tried the "why watch it if you hate it" slant, but she said that there's "nothing else on"...

I think it's time to put my fingers in my ears and "la la la"...

Tanya's cancer s/l was a good couple of years ago.
As for Jim's stroke, that wasn't planned, the actor actually had a stroke, so the story was written in without it being seen on screen. That was a few years back.

The Patrick storyline sounds like it will show how a stroke can take form and the symptoms leading up to it. It will be an interesting plot to unfold on screen.

The plot with Jim, sadly due to John's position in real life was only focused on the aftermath.

This is right as far as I can remember.

Did Dot have some illness as well to do with her kidney I think?? Not too sure if that was cancer or not, but that was at least several years ago I'm sure.

Yes, you're right, and it was cancer. Pat also had cancer, it was inoperable and she died

Lucy had a cancer scare. She found a lump but it turned out not to be cancerous.

Frank died of throat cancer. Pat had pancreatic cancer. Dot had kidney cancer.
A fair few Z listers died of it too. Like Roy Evan's ex wife.

Tell your friend she has got confused with a Macmillian advert and the last person who had cancer was Tanya over 2 years ago!

If that fails to convince her, next time when you get her a drink make sure you piss in it, works every time

Jim did have a stroke, but it wasn't depicted on screen from start to finish, as it was written in when John Bardon had a stroke. While we saw Jim struggle afterwards, that was because the actor didn't recover as well as was hoped. Charlie Slater had a stroke also, off screen. A few characters have had a stroke but it hasn't been a gritty storyline as Patrick's will presumably be.

Tanya's cancer and Carol's are completely different, although I had those kinds of doubts myself when the storyline was announced. Tanya's was cervical, Carol's is breast and incorporating the genetics aspect, which I don't think has ever been done in a soap before.

I forgot about poor old Pat! Thanks, guys.

She's out of the office today so hopefully she's accepted the fact that I was right (as were you lot) and she was wrong! I think she likes the sound of her own opinionated voice!!

Lucy's 5 minute scare with breast cancer is the most recent I think. As it will effect 1 in 3 people I don't think the Eastenders treatment is unrealistic - particularly with the current storyline which is highlighting the hereditary possibilities for the rest of the family.

I suppose it's totally subjective - personally I hate endless affairs and love triangles but some people might not like the misery of life threatening disease from a soap that should ultimately be seen as entertainment.

It was most likely Pat she was referring to but that was much more than 6 months previous to Carol's storyline.

I think Ann Mitchell played Roy's ex-mistress (and mother of his long lost son) who he was with on the night that his wife died. If I remember correctly we never saw his wife as she had died long before Roy appeared.

Considering the number of people I know who have or have had cancer in real life, I would say if anything it was underrepresented in EE. That said who cares, it's a soap and it's job is to come up with interesting and compelling storylines, not reflect real life perfectly.

That said it doesn't bother me when friends or family slag off the show. It's not to everyone's taste and frankly it's hardly above criticism. Especially on the charge that it can be repetitive.
