Germany vs Algeria has the 1982 angle to it so that's intriguing right off the bat, I just hope Algeria's last 16 game against them is a step above ours in 2010.

Shockingly I am going to give Algeria some credit I thought they were really well organised in getting the result they needed.
No, what's shocking is you not dredging up Pele's quote yet again. Which is ironic because I'm sure people on this board are disregarding your views on African football as much as they are Pele's.

That's a ridiculous assumption to make.
Believe me, speaking for the England team you won't find harsher critics than the English themselves. I dare say it's a similar situation with other European national teams too.

Personally speaking I've offered criticism in this thread about the disorganization of African teams because I truly see the potential there and believe that they're seriously underperforming below their abilities as individuals.
It's not about raking up cliches, it's based purely on what has been displayed in this tournament.

Sometimes people criticise something not because they want to pounce on something, as you say, but in the case of African football teams because they genuinely appreciate what's good there and simply want them to improve.
Sometimes criticism is designed to merely give something a kick up the arse.

And in regards to your assumption that they get criticised because people see them as a threat, quite the contrary, I'd absolutely love to see the African teams being more of a threat.
Good post. You're alright, alrightmate.

if it's an open game, as I think it will be, then we'll give France some problems with our pace and directness and COULD be good enough for the upset. whatever happens, it's just great to see us being decent on the world stage again, and that's not really happened since 94-98. we should get better over the next couple of years too once a few of our U17 World Championship winners from last year (Kelechi Iheannacho and Musa Yahaya are the main ones to look out for) graduate to the main squad
Pee, maybe you can tell me, because no-one else seems able to confirm it and I can't find reports on it in the media. Isn't Keshi the first African coach to take an African team through to the second round? Bar a right thrashing by France that's a huge achievement, if true.

Mind you, I don't know if it will matter, latest reports that the Nigerian team cancelled training because of a dispute over bonuses for reaching the knockout round. It's not the African players and tactics that are the problem, it's their sweet FA's....

You forgot Iran from the Asian sides who could qualify.
I think only 2 African teams will qualify Algeria and Ivory Coast.
Also forgot Australia. They are an asian nation in football terms.

Lack of discipline seems to always let African sides down. Algeria being a notable exception this world cup (they weren't bad last time either). Ivory Coast threw their chance of a last 16 place away. Highly influential players like Yaya Toure being totally anonymous for the most part. Then there's the greed. Disputes over bonus payments while actually at the tournament. Ghana having to have millions in cash flown in to appease the players. They are at a World Cup yet their first thought is their bonuses (and presumably not paying tax on the cash payment). The priorities just aren't right.

No idea what the answer is, the players have the necessary quality. But I can't see Pele's prediction coming true any time soon.

Honestly, I think the problem is with the Football Associations, not the players. You claim "greed", but not all of these players are raking in 150k + a week in top leagues, and those appearance fees and bonuses are important to many of them. The players simply should not even be put in a position where they have to worry about whether or not they'll get the payment due to them. It's up to their Football associations to make certain these things are not even an issue. They need to trust that their FA will pay them accordingly, and there have obviously been issues in the past where payment didn't come through.

It's all very "English" to pooh-pooh any talk about money (especially when all English players are raking it in from not only their club salaries, but endorsement opportunities that African players will never dream of. Look at the advertising portfolio of Joe Hart for this World Cup....how many millions did he make, just for failing to reach the knockout stages?).

This seems the most relevant place to bring it up, the cross for Gyan's goal against Portugal was a work of art.
