I like EE's idea a lot better actually. I wonder when they will start implementing it.

Only downside is that it seems to need a custom EE firmware? Or am I reading that wrong and it just requires an update from the manufacturer.
It's all standards based so doesn't need any EE specific firmware, although generic devices may not have the relevant capabilities enabled in the firmware. It works something like the paper describes below, so just needs support in the OS of the device, e.g. as now included in iOS 8.

Call quality for me using the app is no different to using the mobile service, texting using the app is also fine, but when I receive a text over wireless it displays via the app only and not in my default sms app, which is a known issue (not really an issue, but means there's a loss of synch in sms conversations). My phone does switch off wifi when it goes to sleep, but it checks in periodically every 15 mins or so i think, so sms over wireless do still come through (I might be missing some calls though?). I like how the app runs seamlessly in the background and had indicator lights in the status bar to let you know whether it is on or off. Even if you have enough mobile signal, you can choose to call or text from within the app rather than use the network.

I like having that option as well to force wi-fi calling if need be.

The status notification is a good idea as well and they can be turned off as well if people find them annoying.

Out of curiosity? What phone are you using?

The biggest issue is if you leave the screen off for 10 minutes and then call the phone, the app has just gone to sleep and the call is dropped if there's no mobile signal. If there is mobile signal it comes through via mobile, rather than wifi calling.

Yes I've checked my wifi is not set to sleep, can anyone else test if that is the case for them? it is on my S4.

There doesn't seem to be any way to send feedback either.

Has anyone examined the impact of using the .APK across two devices? I assume you need to have your SIM inserted when the app is installed?

If it works without a SIM after the initial setup, can the app be opened at the same time across two phones?

You need to have the SIM in the phone otherwise it wont work. It uses the SIM to verify the app at all times. You need to reactivate the app each time you swap SIM's.

Ive read reports that the beta doesnt work with phones running custom roms, and/or rooted devices, is this true? and will it be fixed before roll out?

I am not sure there's anything to be fixed? There's a security element here, so rooting is often considered a no no.

Can't see a problem with a custom ROM though.

Jon or Jabbmk1, could you (or anyone else) confirm the fact that the app goes to sleep after 10 + minutes of screen off time and that inbound calls don't come though on the app. I have an S4, in 10 days an LG G3 (although I'm wondering if I've made a mistake after your review!) and I kind of want the app to work. Is it just me or is it a bug with the beta.

Thanks

I've not been activated yet, so just a red circle for me (or amber when trying and failing to connect). Won't know how it works with standby, or indeed any sleep modes (like Sony Stamina mode) until I'm set up.

Well I have turned off those modes, but it just dies and doesn't respond after a while. You'll probably get activated by midday Monday. I really like the app, if and when it reliably works it'll be great.

Nothing to fix, that's the way they want the app to work.

.
What colour is the icon when you first switch your screen back on after over 10 minutes? Mine always green straight away so I assume it hasn't died on mine (nexus 5)

Green straight away, you need another phone to test this as there's no indication the app isn't working at all, but it just isn't.

Although due to the restrictiveness of iOS, it won't have integrated features like the android version, more of a standalone app.

Thanks for that.
So although EE are saying "the latest handsets" it will in fact work for someone who has an iPhone 4s / 5 / 5c / 5s upgraded to iOS8??
That's how I read it anyway.

It would depend on apple as to whether they restrict the required feature set in iOS 8 depending on whether there's any particular processing requirements. As it's reusing much of the LTE standards, that might rule out the 4s, for instance.

Just wondering if it is it the app that goes to sleep, or your power saving settings switching off wifi connection after a period of inactivity? I have HTC One M7 and this does happen to me, but it is because in my power settings, I have my wifi connection put to sleep when screen is off, to conserve battery, so is expected.

Main issue i am having with the app is sms messages going directly to the app - i am not losing messages, but the lack of continuity between this and my default sms application is moderately annoying

I received 2 texts this morning before I got up (so the screen had been off for a few hours) and they both came through the app rather my normal text app.

Got the link this morning and first impressions are good. The only thing missing is the compatibility with my Galaxy Gear. Understandably you can't make or receive calls from the Gear directly with this app, but more importantly there's no way to set up a notification on the Gear for incoming calls. However there is a way of getting notifications for texts.

Perhaps there may be some way to completely integrate the app with the stock dialer app? Or any work around to just get a notification of incoming calls?
Am I also right in thinking this won't work with bluetooth headsets either?

I need to switch my SIM from my Lumia 920 to my iPhone (and put my vodafone sim into my Lumia).

Anyone know if Three and Voda will do sim-type changes for free? iPhone 5 is nano and Lumia is micro.
Three do. I swapped my normal size PAYG SIM for a Micro back in January, by popping into a Three store. There was a cost associated with the SIM change, but this was discounted for reason "phone upgrade". I have no idea if the SIM charge ever comes into play - given that you can get a new SIM for free and then port your old number over to it, I can see a workaround there if they try to charge!

Any way of being added to the trial? I only receive 1-2 bars max at home, most of the time it idles on Emergency Only which is rather annoying!

Rung up CS, lady on the end of the phone had no idea about an App for calling over Wi-Fi or the name 'Three InTouch', but she did take £5 of my monthly bill!

I like EE's method of integrating the Voice Over Wi-Fi into the native dialer etc, though I guess problems will arise for devices not bought through EE (or at least without their firmware) e.g. Nexus 5.

I had three intouch working over the long weekend - I was away, and it was able to login and be used to exchange texts/calls over, for example BT wifi in a place with no signal, as well as at home.

Today I'm in the office, the main location where I have no signal. I'm connected to wifi (which is working fine) yet it's stubbornly refusing to use this wifi. I get "available for registration", the hotspot connected too shown with green lines is "on" under "Hotspots for intouch", but nada.

I notice "login" is available on the menu - which does nothing

Any ideas? The only thing I can think of is that this is a corporate/secure network behind a firewall, but it's not particularly restricted in any unhelpful way. It's not userid/password based either, but authentication is done at the actual wireless 802.11x level

It's unclear how to report such issues other than via 333 which seems tedious for typical beta testing types. I'd prefer to be able to write down my observations.

I am also finding zero synchronization between the intouch sms inbox & my native inbox, though there is reference to this in known issues which is fine.

Any ideas?
nigel.
