COM8 came up at approx 2pm from Winter Hill and isn't just null packets.

A pidscan is showing:

Code:

Scanning with a Freeview HD bluray recorder doesn't find any channels, and nothing has changed in the service tables, so no new services are being advertised yet.

I'm just trying to dump a sample of the mux and get it into tsreaderlite to see what it sees. (edit: tsreaderlite doesn't like it, it crashes!)

I thought Channel 4 were going to have some new HD channels? That's all gone very quiet.

Seems most likely - mediainfo doesn't report data for the video stream so I presume it doesn't recognise it. I'll try to get some bandwidth stats for the audio and video.

It makes sense that Winter Hill would have it - that being the tx for Salford Quays/Media City where BBC Sport are hq'd and BBC R&D have a significant presence at their North Lab. Anyone else seeing COM8 up - CP maybe?

Anyone any clues what can decode HEVC on a linux pc, and how I'd go about it to see what the video contains?

I'm guessing the OP called it Com8 because they were checking the frequency *reserved for Com8, which wouldn't be the UHD test. Also I think the UHD is only coming from Crystal Palace (which doesn't have a new mux, yet)

My money is on Red Button HD for Wimbledon/Commonwealth Games.

EDIT:

Didn't think of that. I've placed my bet though.

COM8 came up on Sandy Heath the same day COM7 came up a few weeks before Christmas, and has been up ever since. No services on COM8 but I check the signal strength and try scanning it for channels about once a month. My Humax HDR Fox T2 never finds any on it.

I repeat, when are we getting the extra HD channels from C4? They were the other announced broadcaster in addition to the BBC.

Winter Hill tested COM8 on quite a few occasions last year with null packets and then it ceased broadcasting. Perhaps Sandy gets cheaper electricity I have no idea re C4's rumoured HD channels, there are other threads mulling that one over. I just try to report what I see.

So some bandwidth snapshots per pid...

Here's the pidscan list again with approx bandwidth values added at the start of each line:

Code:
15 kbit/s PID found: 0 (0x0000) [SECTION: Program Association Table (PAT)]
0.3 kbit/s PID found: 16 (0x0010) [SECTION: Network Information Table (NIT) - actual network]
1.6 kbit/s PID found: 17 (0x0011) [SECTION: Service Description Table (SDT) - actual transport stream]
25 kbit/s PID found: 18 (0x0012) [SECTION: Event Information Table (EIT) - actual transport stream, schedule]
3.5 kbit/s PID found: 20 (0x0014) [SECTION: Time Offset Table (TOT)]
15.1 kbit/s PID found: 100 (0x0064) [SECTION: Program Map Table (PMT)]
36200 kbit/s PID found: 101 (0x0065) [PS/PES: ITU-T Rec. H.262 | ISO/IEC 13818-2 or ISO/IEC 11172-2 video stream]
150 kbit/s PID found: 102 (0x0066) [PS/PES: ISO/IEC 13818-3 or ISO/IEC 11172-3 audio stream]
45.2 kbit/s PID found: 199 (0x00c7) [unknown]
15.1 kbit/s PID found: 200 (0x00c8) [SECTION: Program Map Table (PMT)]
3700 kbit/s PID found: 8191 (0x1fff) [stuffing]
Note I've just taken these figures from dvbsnoop -s bandwidth $PID - they are a very short snapshot and do fluctuate - but they give an impression of just how much bandwidth is going into that one video stream on 101!

You could be right. Reading the latest BBC blog, it seems Freeview will only be having two RB streams after all (not 5 as in some earlier reports) and both will be on DVB-T muxes.

Sorry to go OT but what frequency are you checking? I can't see anything.

I hope it's UHD trials and that it will be visible for recording. I'd like to compare 1080i/25 to 2160p/50 for football.

COM8 is on UHF 34 from Sandy Heath. Whenever I've checked every month or two it has the same signal strength (roughly, but not exactly) as COM7 on UHF 32. But COM8 has so far had no channels when I've tried getting my box to manual tune it.

This thread from February http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1940308 previously noted that Sandy COM8 was left powered up - it has the freq as 578MHz which is C34.

If it's anything like the 8k Olympics at 50fps shown by the BBC, don't get your hopes up. It really needs over 100fps.

I found this thread:
http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1940308
but there's nothing on Ch34 at Sandy.

Edit: Cross posting noted. Thanks for the info guys.

It seems rather a waste to use it for football, there is much better content a 4K trial could use. Off topic I realise, but I would like to draw people's attention to the fact that life does not start and end with football for some of us. It's going to be a miserable couple of weeks, the sooner England get knocked out the better and then the TV schedules for other things are less likely to be disrupted with zero notice.

OK well C34 did have an empty DVB-T2 mux on it from Sandy Heath for ages, months on end. Maybe someone finally noticed and switched it off?

I think it's more to do with the fact that they using the FIFA UHD stream for the purpose of the test, so a real time test of a UHD feed being distributed via internet and terrestrial using HEVC - no need to create alternative UHD content for the trial. Regardless of what happens to England, the schedules will remain disrupted. If, during the latter stages of the World Cup, matches overrun, then it will impact the schedules regardless of the team involved. And then there's Wimbledon, Glastonbury, the British Grand Prix and the Commonwealth Games to fill the schedules...

OK if there's already a UHD stream that makes sense, it's one less thing to have to create for a test, less money spent etc.

Looks like it. I can't get a tuning lock on it today, although as you say it has been running for months...

As much as I'm not interested in football it does have lots of fast, colourful movement with large and small objects, both close up and in the crowd. It's a good test for a new system. Much better than the incredibly slow pans they use to sell the 4k TVs.

Firstly, I'm sure the entire point of the UHD trials are because some of the matches are being broadcast in UHD on a trial basis. They could do them at any time if they wanted to use pre-recorded material. Football requires a high bit-rate to look good compared to most material (dramas for example require relatively low bit-rates), so is a good candidate for stress-testing encoders and the like.

Secondly, whether England get eliminated tomorrow or make it to the final doesn't change the fact that every match will be on TV.

You've omitted the Tour de France from July 5th starting in Yorkshire.
