I have a friend who has a Samsung S3 and I would like to lend him a Kenyan sim card for a forthcoming trip. He is on Virgin and I am guessing that it is locked (I'm not sure whether he would know whether it is or not). What is the easiest way of unlocking it ?

Probably just taking it in to your local unlocking shop, should cost £10 and be done while you wait or in a couple of hours.

Virgin will want around £20 and up to a month to process an unlock (if he still has an account with them).

Have you tried another sim in it? It could already be unlocked.

No, that will be the first thing I do when I see him, but he is 30 mins drive away. I wanted to know my options when I do it

The 99p price shown is a bit of link bait., you must have missed the "Samsung +£11" at your link?

From their T&C's (which are available on the internet!)
7.5 Unlocking your handset: Handsets that are used to access our Services are locked to the Network. If you wish to unlock your handset from the Network you will need to contact our Team and pay the Charges for unlocking your handset as set out in the Tariff Table. You will also need to have paid all Charges owing on your account before we unlock your handset. For security reasons you will also need to register the handset you wish to unlock with us before we unlock it for you.

My friend contacted Virgin who said it would take 30 days to unlock it. He leaves in 10 days

I mentioned that in my first post . Any unlocker type mobile shop should unlock it for you while you wait.
