On a scale of 1-10, how likely are Italy going to go for a win against Uruguay...
........knowing a draw tops the group?
Just cannot see why they would really want to go out and win that match after beating Costa Rica tomorrow, having seen them in many international tournaments, they will protect what they have and be simply open minded to scoring a goal. Who agrees Uruguay 0 Italy 0 and England players walk off the pitch with their hands held behind their head's after spanking Costa 4 zip? That's the vision I get.

No one wants to answer.
Consensus is 1 then, by matter of de-bloody-fault. Accepted it. Moving on and done. |

Italy have to beat Costa Rica yet, they will probably be quite happy to get four more points.

Playing for a draw doesn't mean you'll get one. Uruguay are a dangerous attacking side. Italians are probably smart enough to realise the best defence is attack. I think they'll want to score and then perhaps sit back. If Uruguay snag a late goal then, it's no big deal for them, but I can't see them just sitting back for the whole 90 minutes- especially if they have Suarez running at them, threatening to score.

It depends on the result they get against Costa Rica.
Either way, I think we're going home regardless. |

I'd love England to sneaky creep through, and then suddenly start performing.
At least it would be something different to performing reasonably well then getting knocked out

OP you assume that a football team can just decide to have a draw if they happen to feel like it.
I think that right now England would have loved to be in the position where if they felt like having a draw then they could just go and do it. That would mean that we'd have had two draws so far and only needed to win the final group match. Uruguay will be fighting for a victory because they will feel like they have a decent chance of qualifying. You can't just believe that you can play for a draw on a whim. Not to mention that the other final group match will be played at the same time and Italy can't afford to predict how the other match will turn out. Italy could end up failing to progress if they try messing about like that as both Uruguay and Costa Rica can still qualify, even if Costa Rica lose to Italy tomorrow. If Italy play for a draw it will be their own fault if they come a cropper in the final few minutes. |

Italy wont be guaranteed qualification against Costa Rica and they will be expecting a very tough game against an eager Uruguay should they win. I can't see anyway in which Italy would go easy on Uruguay unless they demolish CR 5-0 and therefore goal difference will be fine.

Is beating Costa Rica a formality for Italy?

Yes but so was Uruguay to beat CR, Spain to beat Chile, Holland against Australia, Argies and Bosnia, Brazil and Croatia.
And whilst some of those teams did it none of them made it look simple. A decent result tomorrow would be 1-0 or 2-0 Italy. Enough to get CR's goal difference down whilst Italy still make a game of Uruguay. Depend on the Uruguay Italy game we'd have to beat CR 3-0 roughly to qualify. |

If we play very well against Costa Ria I think I'd be quite happy overall with excitement going into the Euro's as there is clearly a spark somewhere in here. Hodgson just has to have the balls to ditch the players that aren't working.
If we lose and play poorly against CR then I don't care what anyone says this may not be the worst squad but it would be a worse WC than 2010. |

The bookies have England's chances of qualifying at around 8%. Assuming Italy win tonight, which is not a definite by any means, at least Italy and Uruguay can't play out a draw assuming they will both qualify. Italy would certainly "rest" some of their best players. If Suarez plays, I think Uruguay will beat Italy anyway and we could end up with 3 teams on 6 points.

If Italy only win by 1 goal today, England would need to beat Costa Rica by 2 goals to qualify, coupled with Italy beating Uruguay of course. |

I can see us within minutes of Qualifying for Second around, and Suarez gets a late winner

If it's a late winner it makes no difference to England, they'd still be out if Italy v Uruguay was a draw.

Whatever happens today, it will be interesting to see what team is put out on Tuesday. If we are still in with a chance then will it the be the same team or near as damn it that played yesterday? Or if it's a dead rubber as far as qualification goes then will he make wholesale changes? Uruguay may need England to do them a favour too by not losing/drawing to Costa Rica.

If I was Roy on Tuesday, Inwould play players who hadn't played, but also Drop players, who wouldn't be in the Squad cause of there Ages, Abilities in 2016. Qualifying for tge Euros should be simple, so I would go into the future matches, with a squad for 2016. |

Whatever happens I think Italy will be aiming for a win. They may rest a few key players, but I think the objective will be the same - a win will give them further confidence and momentum to take into the next round.

If Suarez plays well I cant see Italy beating Uruguay though, we may as well pack up and go home.
Move on and prepare for next tournament. |
