Same old story with the result last night. Expectations were low starting the tournament but the players still felt the pressure.

If you were the manager/FA what would you do to improve our chances before the Euros/next WC?

Here's my thoughts;

- Create an identity and stick with it. We are known for our fast paced, high tempo play. Do we want to carry on with this or change it completely as currently we either don't have one or are unsure which footballing identity to adopt unlike the top international teams who you can generally identify in terms of footballing philosophy

- Improve passing drills/more work on the training ground- more one or two touch passing to open teams up more

- Improve runs off the ball. Hoddle mentioned this the other night, not enough players running off the ball to create options for players on the ball

- Back to the drawing board defensively. Poor defensive displays both games were our defence in previous tournaments was our strong point compared to our attack

- Team balance more important than simply picking the 'best' players. Gerrard is no DM and yet he is asked to play there based on reputation to keep him in the team as he hasn't got the legs to play more advanced like he used to. Rooney plays on the left (vs Italy) when half the time he couldn't be arsed covering Baines

- Introduce a quota of English players in the premier league squads. FFP and its rules re homegrown players doesn't go far enough

- Encourage more players to play abroad to get more first team football and broaden different ways of playing

Have a complete clearout of the "Old Boys Club" at the FA

Stop picking England players from the Premiership. The Premiership nowadays is nothing more than a televised international league of clubs owned by foreigners. In future select English players from English clubs.

Remove hodgson, and the people who appointed him.

Get the old guard as far away from the england team as possible.

Gerrard, rooney, frank, hart, the lot.

They need to stop using wing backs and find a proper pair of wingers.

Pick a team, not individuals.

- Remove Woy. He doesn't have the right mentality. He even hinted that he wouldn't have minded a draw against Uruguay without even thinking of the consquences like what happened today. Liverpool got rid of him for a reason.

- Revamp the English FA and make sure all English players get proper training that isn't slow, predictable and just lacks technical ability.

- Bring in a manager with the right mentality to bring our football up to date and can motivate players. Make sure he isn't older than 50. Doesn't matter if he isn't English.

- Focus on a identity and stick with it. Make sure all players work in that system instead of expcting the 'superstars' like Rooney to carry us when it's never gonna happen.

- Pick players on merit instead of reputation. If any player has a bad game drop him immediately if there's competition in that area.

Put Boris Johnson in charge

Build a team with a structure rather than pick all the best players and play them out of position. I think he'll get rid of Gerrard and Lampard and maybe Rooney.

I wasn't expecting anything great at this World Cup but it's disappointing to lose both first round games. I side didn't play with passion like they do in the premiership and the midfield and defence were just awful. Hodgson needs to build a more structured side and remove all the old duffers.

I agree with this. This has been a problem with England for years and years. They always play so naively.

We need players to change their mentality when it comes to first team football, stop arsing about sitting in the stands for Man City and go and play abroad, become better players, force themselves on the International scene, instead of wasting their careers, where the only time they touch a ball is in training.

Until English players with potential stop thinking about bank balance instead of playing first team football, we will have the same disappointment every tournament.

A lot of Costa Rica's players probably play football at the equivalent of Championship level, so if we need to pick players who can do a decent job in their correct position from teams lower down the Premier league then so be it. Being world class or not at International level means nothing, its about being a team

Club football is the be all and end all in this country. Nobody gives a monkey's about international friendlies. Even the tournament qualifiers can be a drag. It's only if and when England get to the finals that people take an interest. It will all be forgotten about once the domestic season kicks off in August.

The PL is all very well but it's done nothing to the England cause. I can't see that changing for the foreseeable future.

It's a huge question that you could fill a book trying to answer.

In short, I think they need to follow the steps the Germans took around 2004 or so. Lay down a strong infrastructure between the national FA and domestic clubs, bring in an under 23 league that the Germans have, start thinking about style of football and try to modernise that, foster a club mentality at international level, employ more coaches at youth level and play a particular brand of football that you stick to throughout all the teams and work at it and evolve it over a long period of time ....and all the other obvious things that other countries do.

It's not so much thinking what things to do, but having the power to actually make it happen and then being prepared to invest in things which don't provide obvious short term results, as well as being willing to take steps back in order to eventually go forward. The clubs in England have a lot of power over the FA so getting them to agree to release players to attend extra training sessions and stuff like that isn't the priority in this country to a vast number of people who think of their clubs first 95% of the time. The balance of power is very much with the premier league because it's a product all year round.

We also have an obsession in this country over arguing the rights and wrongs of individual players with hardly any emphasis on tactical shape or style of play. In this country it's all about how one player is rubbish and shouldn't play or how people aren't passionate enough (because that's what you want, right - someone to charge around the pitch like a headless chicken and get sent off after 10 minutes?), and some people swing from "we're brilliant" to "we're rubbish" with nothing in between. I (very generally) don't think we (the UK) understand modern football as well as other countries do.

And the players often look tight on the big occasion too whereas other nations seem more expressive. I don't know how much work they do with the guy who worked with O'Sullivan or someone with psychological and performance expertise but they look very much in need of that kind of preparation too if they don't already do that.

Basically we reap what we sow.

Jesus , we play badly enough already , just imagine what we'd be like with Jose's negative tactics !!

Anyways he needs to spend huge amounts of money to achieve success so there no way he will EVER consider managing a national team .
