Horrors' repeats of Who have changed my life

Ok, well not really changed my life, but been good fun.

A few months ago I began a journey to go through all the classic episodes, but it was slow going, so these showings have been a good way of expediating it. Anyway, I wanted to start this thread for anyone like me who hasn't seen much classic who, have your opinions changed? Personally I'm really surprised how much wit there was in Pertwee and Bakers' portrayals/scripts. For example, in Talons, Leela asks the doctor why she had to wear the victorian clothes and he eventually replies that we don't want to scare the horses, hilarious

I always knew there were some good stories and so far this is true which is great. It's also funny seeing that the sonic was used much less but the doc did have a lot of random stuff in his pockets! Bakers portrayal was very masterful, on earth, gallifrey et al, his doctor wasalways smartest man in the room, but he had a playful way of handling the lesser people around him!

I found Pertwees stories great, it was more of a team effort, him + unit saving the day. The show really evolved into something different (not better, just diff) in Bakers days. So it's been really cool seeing the show evolve.

I don't really need to watch the stories on The Horror Channel, as I have got every "Classic Who" story that has been released on DVD. Including the ones that have had some missing episodes animated. I even have The Web of Fear on DVD, that has episode 3 presented as moving tele-snaps, and the original soundtrack with it.

I do know that as The Horror Channel are still showing "Classic Who" in the evenings during the week, I can put the channel on, if so wish.

If it's only to get away from the durge that is The World Cup! Shan't bother with any more of that, now England are out.

got every classic who dvd,but it is good fun now and again to watch the odd episode and especially the omnibus showings (brings back memories of watching them on UK Gold in the 90s )

its been great to see some of the old stories.
always makes me sad seeing sarah jane from back in the day

without starting an argument .... 'New Who' really has nothing on the writing of 'Old Who' does it? I mean there are some ridiculous moments in old who, but not anywhere near as much as there are in in New Who. I really think the show suffers from only having one episode 45 minute stories.

I think, quibbles with Moffat's and RTD's shortcomings aside, the new series is a million times better written than the old. There's simply no contest to me, TV writing has evolved and improved so much in recent years that 99% of the classic series can't hold a candle to today's material.

I love both old AND new!
The classic series was more straightforward - the Tardis crew land on a planet, solve the problems and go away again. (Most of the time)
The new series is great with its new-fangled CGI -effects and high-profile guest stars.
But I wouldn't say they are better written! The main answer to todays series seems to depend on the Sonic Screwdriver or playing about with time-travel!!

Hard to compare the two, to be honest!

New who is great and will written, this thread was started because I wanted to celebrate that classic who was great too and still stands the test of time to us who fans as well as a few non whovians. You can't compare the two eras, as good as classic who still is, the fact it is on Horror Channel and not on mainstream tv like bbc 1,2,3 etc shows that we needed new who to evolve and change its style, which it successfully did. Combining the best of who at its core but still offering something to part-time or zero-time whovians. New who respects all that is good from classic who but also now is had to modern standards and styles of tv sci fi.

Doctor Who is Doctor Who. Whatever century. (penetrating insight there.) Every era has it's good and not so good parts. Heck, every STORY has it's good and not so good parts. Am not uncritical and have my favourite eras, stories, Doctors like everybody else, but....the fact that it exists is a constant source of delight to me. Best programme evah.

How long 'til Season 34 again?

Well said.

All the 'new Who' versus 'old Who' quibbling that goes on at times is rather juvenile, isn't it?

Just be grateful the stories are out there whatever era they come from.

Classic who & stories for me too. Don't get me wrong i do like the new who with its CGI & other mod cons, but give me the old 4 part stories anyday. New who & its 45 minute episodes are just so rushed & jump rather quickly to its conclusion.
New who to me would be better with stories consisting of two 45 minute episodes
