Shame, Iran played with more application than many we have seen so far, but take nothing away from Messi as it was a cracking goal.

Well, Iran did have their chances and should have taken one of them.

The other 89 and a half minutes of Messi's performance should not be overlooked because of that goal. Fat chance of that happening though. Best player in the world, blah, blah, blah...

Costa Rica and Iran don't have superstar names with world beating quality but they've both done better than England.

You can't really do much against something like that.

Would still say that is Ronaldo personally but what a goal and what a player, still think Argentina can be beaten though they have hardly been over impressive in there 2 games but time will tell.

You kinda miss the point. When playing below expected standards just a player like Suarez or Messi can just change things totally.

Shouldn't it?

He's an impact player and it doesn't really matter how poorly he plays in the match as a whole if he can still decide it with goals like that when it really matters.

Contrast it to Iran who had their chances in this match, didn't take them and it's ended up costing them the match.

In fairness, he is the best player in the world. Wasn't great today but was better than Higuain and Aguero. He had a few moments of good play but it's hard when he's being marked that tight.

Unlucky Iran. Shame it had to be the knackered striker Reza to deal with Messi for his shot.

Messi producing when it matters as per usual.

The Iranian goalie's still going in my squad for team of the tournament at the end of the group stages (provided he doesn't have a nightmare in his last group game).

I was thinking exactly the same. England need a star turn like that.

Feel sorry for Iran, they did play well and were very unlucky to lose the game. Awesome goal from Messi though.

Very harsh on Iran, but when the opposition have a player of Messi's quality the result isn't safe until the referee blows the final whistle.
