Some teams at this World Cup as in the past are using players from our lower division's, and having success against bigger team's, maybe we should look for player's in at least the Championship, they will be hungry, not money mad, and will work hard to prove a point, we can't do any worst.

They'll show more pride and passion.

oh please, I knew someone who played for Leyton Orient he was money mad and always showing off when I saw him, work hard he was a lazy little shit.

Leyton Orient had the good sense to show him the door.

He's now playing non-league, I still have his number, shall I give it to Roy Hodgson.

I recall pundits discussing this in the past. If there's no natural English left back, for example, in the Premier League, why not use a steady, experienced one from the Championship rather than make a PL player unsuited to the role cover it? The argument always used against this is that a Championship player (even one who has played in the PL) won't have enough experience against quality foreign players. But let's face it, could they really do much worse? And it seems to work for the smaller nations.

Sometimes players in the lower divisions are more hungry for success because they want to get to the top.

You've got the premier league player who earns a shedload of money and drives a supercar every week and the lower division player who earns a modest salary, if the lower division player showcases himself really well in this tournament he could very well be signed up by a top team and be set up for life.

I reckon England should call up BNP members or Combat18 (if they're still going).
After all, all that's needed is 'pashun'.

We should certainly try it. Fed up of constant talk about our best players having to play in roles they're not really comfortable in because we won't look below the Premier League. I'm sure that the best Championship players today are no worse than many of those who played in the old Division 1 before the foreign influx. And back in the day, anyone in old Division 1 had a shot at the England team if they were half decent and in form.

I assume people favouring this ludicrous suggestion don't actually watch the Championship. As a season ticket holder at Reading there is absolutely no way that a majority of the players I see week in week out would ever be good enough to play in the Premier League, let alone internationally (except maybe against San Marino or someone like that). We all know how great Jay Bothroyd was...

Also is there a more meaningless phrase in football than passion?

In my version, you'd only be picking a few players to fill in positional gaps in the England squad. You wouldn't be choosing almost exclusively from the Championship.

Nobody in the Championship is good enough for England. But Roy has to pick the best team not the best players and I don't think he's doing that.

A number of players who started out in the lower leagues went with England..

Hart
Baines
Lallana
Lambert

Others have had loan spells into the Championship like Barkley and Henderson.

If it was just about players being paid too much that they don't care then why are the favourites:

Germany
Brazil
Spain
Germany
Netherlands

Even the players from Chile won't be on peanuts in most cases...

Ok Costa Rica have been the surprise but their goalscorer yesterday was a massive waste of money for Fulham who probably wouldn't be pick for anyone else.

Not sure I entirely agree with that. Many foreign Championship players play for teams who would give England a good match.

that doesn't invalidate the point that FrankieF made

maybe the managers of those teams are concentrating more on the balance of their side rather than just trying to fit the "best" players into an XI which is what he was saying

I think we're saying the same thing. It's the best team that is important and that may mean looking at some Championship players. This isn't a new idea. I recall Dave Jones saying it and was it Sven who said he wouldn't rule out Championship players?

where are the gaps in the England team that could have been filled by someone from a lower division tho

the example you gave of left back is one area that looks strong for England tbh

from my perspective the only two positions that could have been questioned were right-back , no obvious cover for Johnson and doubts over his quality , and a defensive midfielder , don't really think there was one in the squad which led to gerrard being played a lot deeper than he probably should have

now I don't really follow championship football apart from the odd game but not sure if there is anyone you could say would definitely have been an improvement over Johnson at right back. maybe hodgson had decided he didn't need an out and out holding midfielder in the squad , which is another debate altogether.

England have better players than any of those countries but they pick unbalanced teams and the players from the top clubs that aren't really the best team. Nobody eligible for England in the Championship would get in the England squad never mind team but players outwith the top clubs in the Premier League need to be involved more. England have all the ingredients there to win a major tournament they just need a brave manager and not some FA puppet playing it safe with Gerrard/Lampard etc.

^^ lol this, sick of hearing these numpties on 5live callins banging on about passion and salaries - like the other teams somehow care more about winning the biggest prize in football or dont have multi millionnaires playing for them.

The reality of England's world cup so far.

We have a young inexperienced squad with potential for the future
We are playing in a hot and humid climate that the players aren't used to
We lost two incredibly tight games to teams ranked slightly higher than us in FIFA rankings - we could've just as easily had 2,3 or 4 points from those games (luck of the draw groups)..
Three of our conceded goals were bad inidividual defensive errors and are nothing to do with "passion" or Roys coaching.

John Stones and Jon Flanagan look like a good prospect for right back, Kyle Walker if he was fit would start ahead of Johnson for me. England have a bright future with their players and if they sack Roy and get someone like Redknapp or even Hoddle in then all the better.

I'm not sure we'd even need to go to the Championship. There are many English players in the Premier League (many at lower clubs) who didn't get a look-in this time, but ask yourself if the majority of them are really good enough to play in the national side?

Right backs:

Kyle Walker
Micah Richards
Nathaniel Clyne
Carl Jenkinson
Kyle Naughton

Centre backs:

Steven Caulker
Ryan Shawcross
James Tomkins
Michael Dawson
Joleon Lescott

Left backs:

Ashley Cole
Kieran Gibbs
Ryan Bertrand
Kieran Richardson
Danny Rose

Defensive midfielders:

Gareth Barry
Lee Cattermole
Steve Sidwell
Jake Livermore
Ashley Westwood

Out of that lot I'd be willing to give Clyne, Richards, Caulker, Cattermole and Gibbs a go.

Most of the English talent in the Championship are probably players rejected at youth team level by Premier league clubs or sold on because they couldn't get games.

I guess the OP is thinking of Rickie Lambert but he signed for Southampton in League One - if they'd been a Premier league side the Saints would have not touched him.

Sure there might be some talent but they need to break into a 1st team before even thinking about International football.

Kyle Walker is about the best there and probably would have played if he wasn't injured, the rest aren't up to the job bar maybe Shawcross although I could see him being too agricultural at international level but I'd play him again to see. I would have taken Gareth Barry ahead of Henderson to the World Cup and possibly Carrick instead of Lampard to be the metronome in midfield.

Every player in the Championship wants to be in the Premier League and make big money, in a lot of case either they or their teams aren't good enough. So yes, by picking worse players you can do worse. Amazingly.

Well I did say this before Englands first game, what suddenly makes a player from a relegated PL team, not considered for the England squad, and what makes a player recently promoted from the Championship suddenly good enough to be considered for the National team.

Chile have 1 defender from Forrest and one from Cardiff and that team has done far better than England could of ever hoped for in this WC.

And FIFA world rankings have been thrown out for this tournament Holland, France, Costa Rica, Chile are all proving rankings mean little in a tournament. Even countries like Iran and Ghana are taking it to the big boys.
