One Apple ID, two handsets on find friends?

Hello! I have given my old iPhone to my son and have set it up using my Apple ID. I would like to be able to use Find Friends on the handset, however it won't let me 'add myself' to contacts - would I need to start again with a new ID or something?

Isn't there a "find my iphone" app to find your own devices?

Find my iPhone shows all devices using the same ID.

I've not actually used it but isn't the clue in the name. If you have set the phone up using your id it will not be looking for a friend as it has your details linked to it. If you want to use your details then you can use Find my iPhone which will give its location for you.

Not that it helps right now, but I think iOS 8 (if your old iPhone will run it when it's released) will enable you to set up with a different ID but share payment details using the family sharing functionality. This should allow you to use find my friends for the old iPhone while still being able to share / approve app purchases from your iOS device.

You can have different IDs used for the app store and for other services. So perhaps share the same ID for the store so you don't have to the pay for the same apps twice, but then have different IDs for Find-my-Friends, Facetime and iMessage. Otherwise you'll get each others calls and texts.
