A Great Britain team
I think that England & Scotland & Wales should join up for football; just imagine if we'd had the benefit of Gareth Bale in the team for this WC......

No other countries do what we do, there isn't a Sicily or a Corsica or Alaska team.

Not a good idea, I would rather keep our own identities. |

Horrible idea. It's fine as it is.
Wembley would be full of Scots again.

Quoted from your link: The Corsica national football team (Corsican: Squadra Corsa di Balò) is the unofficial football team for the island of Corsica, France. It is not affiliated with FIFA or UEFA. Until now, the selection has played against national teams only three times : in 1967 against France, in 1998, just before the 1998 FIFA World Cup against Cameroon (as a preparation game for the Lions Indomptables), and more recently in 2009 against Congo. In the past, the selection has also played against club teams, as in 1962 against OGC Nice, or Stade Reims in 1963.

This topic comes up every time England get knocked out of a tournament.
Keep your hands off our best players, we're crap enough as it is ! What about Gibraltar, maybe you can have some of theirs ? |

According to the UN, England nor Wales nor Scotland (that may soon change.....) nor Northern Ireland are countries, but the UK is, so perhaps I should've said UK rather than GB; but technically England is not a country (it doesn't say England on your passport).

aka...can Bale and Ramsay be English please....
I think the FA's have been separate for so long that they would resist any pressure to amalgamate. |

Isn't the Faroe Islands technically part of Denmark? They have a FIFA team.

I was thinking about something like this recently. I mean over the years a lot of great players never got a sniff of a world cup as their national teams are just never good enough to qualify. Maybe there could be a spot reserved for a world XI. A nominated manager could pick a squad of players from among all the nations that failed to qualify. Probably an awful idea, but hey it would at least get some great players into the world cup.

Never happen JS.
Simply put, the various bunch of old boys wont want to lose their little bit of power, look what happened with the "GB" team at the Olympics. Also remember we were only allowed a GB team because we were hosts as the IOC has put the block on it in previous years. |

No thanks pal. Surely the team would only get worse if Welsh and Scottish players were in?

I like these kind of hypothetical scenarios. |

But the UK situation is bizarre...and amazing how we get away with it. For EVERY sport it should be either (England/Scot etc) OR GB/NI, I'm sure foriegners assume we make it up as we go along (eg, English hockey team.....GB for the Olympics and one Champion's Trophy....) but it's to do with associations rather than countries (eg Gibraltar FA). I wonder what would happen if one "country" had two FA's. It might even happen somewhere? Belgium clearly doesn't, but that country would be ripe for having a Wallonia FA and Flemish FA. |

It'd never happen but you'd have a very good team - Handanovic, Coleman, Ivanovic, Benatia, Alaba, Matic, Mkhitaryan, Hamsik, Bale, Yarmolenko, Ibrahimovic and subs - Cech, McGregor, Skrtel, Subotic, Piszczek, Nuri Sahin, Ramsey, Erikssen, Arda Turan, Konoplyanka, Salah, Lewandowski. That's my quick 23.
I like these kind of hypothetical scenarios. Could be used in Europe too, so stars like Bale get to play in finals. ![]() Also once your country got knocked out it would be pretty easy to support R of W or R of E. |
