If the England players didn't try or care then I think there's an argument to be made about endorsements and commercial activities, but I don't think that's the case. They did their best but weren't good enough for a multitude of reasons, that's the way it goes but Rooney and Hart appearing in adverts has no relevance.

Football is a lucrative and hugely popular sport so I don't see why the top players shouldn't be able to take advantage of that, provided it doesn't have a detrimental effect on their game or the sport in general of course.

If Wayne Rooney was genuinely sorry then what's stopping him from donating 3 months wages to developing grassroots football in England? At least a gesture like that would do something to help England's chances in the future. But of course he won't do that and his words of apology are about as worthless as his performances on the pitch.

The stick Rooney has received for our World Cup disaster is embarrassing to read. The problem is that the media have built him up to be a world class player when he isn't one. Then the public expect him to do something like Messi did today and when he doesn't they go mad. He was one of Englands best performers in both the games. Henry and Seedorf both said that for 60 minutes he was Englands best player against Italy. Only our own slag him off in such a manner

He isn't the messiah and he is a very naughty boy but he was one of our better players in this tournament. He is getting a lot of stick purely because he is Englands poster boy and highest paid player. None of these two things are his fault.

People just want the players to suffer in some way because they are upset. Why people blame the players for the money they get is totally beyond me. If someone offered you it then you would take it. There is a lot of raw emotion around to be fair but some of the comments being made are so ridiculous. It just sounds like children saying "If we don't win then I will scream and scream and scream"

As angry as I was by our inept performances , I am far more saddened by the bleating of our public. Even the media on the whole have been pretty level headed this time around.

I was laughing at the reaction of the Brazil fans after their draw with Mexico. Their fans were still confident, their media criticised the performance is a measured way and nobody is panicking. If that was us in their position half the country would be burning effigies of Wayne Rooney

I think the criticism of Rooney himself is actually misplaced.

It's not Wayne Rooney who's been telling us he's the world class saviour of English football - it's the media and pundits in this country. They hyped the crap out of him before he even kicked a ball for Everton in the premiership and it's been that way for his entire career. Every time he does anything at all for his club, the pundits go nuts over it like we have just witnessed the equivalent of Maradona's second '86 World Cup goal against England.

There's no doubt at all that he's hugely overrated and next to the true greats in modern football, he is decidedly average, but he genuinely is one of the best English players around today. In the league he looks decent enough, but the fact is he can't deliver the goods at international tournament level because he simply isn't as good as the British media make him out to be.

It's unfair to blame Rooney for our terrible performance at this World Cup. He's created a goal and scored one in two games, so all in all, he's one of the few players who can say they made a positive contribution. Sure, he looked poor at times, but the entire team were poor - particularly our defence, which was absolutely dreadful.

If you want to have a pop at anyone over Rooney, have a pop at the clowns who have overrated and overhyped him since he was a kid. He could never possibly hope to live up to it.

I agree with the people who said that he has been vastly over hyped by the media and this simply isn't fair to him. Like many of 'The Golden Generation' they had been made out to be virtual supermen, who were 'world class'. This is the media saying this, not them.
