Word is that Frank Lampard will be captain and Luke Shaw coming in for Baines who has a knock.

First time in my life that England have been involved in a pointless (for them) world cup group game.
I hope the relaxed atmosphere sees us thrash the Ricans

The England squad visited an orphanage in Brazil today as part of their farewell engagements.
"It was heartbreaking to see their sad little faces" said Pablo aged 6.
Great. I am stealing but changing the name to the Portuguese "Paulo".

Roy Hodgpotch has revealed England will change their team name to Costa Rica for their last group match against Costa Rica. Hodgpotch denied this gave their team an unfair advantage but did admit "with both teams sharing the same name it means England can't lose."

WOMAN'S DIARY

Thursday 19 June 2014

Saw him in the evening and he was acting really strangely.

I'd been shopping in the afternoon with the girls and was a bit late
meeting him, thought it might be that.

The bar was really crowded and loud, so I suggested we go somewhere quieter to talk.

He was still very subdued and distracted so I suggested we went
somewhere nice to eat.

All through dinner he just didn't seem himself - he hardly laughed
and didn't seem to be paying any attention to me or to what I was
saying. I just knew that something was wrong.

He dropped me back home and I wondered if he was going to come in.

He hesitated but followed.

I asked him what was wrong, but he just half shook his head and
turned the television on.

After about ten ! minutes of silence I said that I was going upstairs
to bed, I put my arms around him and told him that I loved him
deeply.

He just gave a sigh and a sad sort of smile.

He didn't follow me up immediately but came up later and, to my
surprise, we made love - but he still seemed distant and a bit cold.

I cried myself to sleep - I think he's planning to leave me - maybe he's
found someone else.

MAN'S DIARY

Gutted.

Got a shag though.

Yeah he's giving the youth and fringe players a run out.
I think shaw would have been in even if Baines was fit.

Lampard is probably a farewell appearance. I don't see the point in Hodgeson picking him again when he's got young midfielders there who need games together and on the international stage which is a differnt type of game.

Saw some pundit on Sky (may have been Tony Cottee) talking about how England should win and put a good few goals past them for the fans. Typical of the arrogance of the media and still no lessons learned to seemingly completely discount Costa Rica despite them being the best team in the group so far.

With smalling, Jones in defence I will be amazed if Costa Rica dont score at least 1

As if there would have been a team talk with Roy saying "Alright boys, in this game I want you to score some goals. For the fans, and all that."

Last time this kind of scenario happened to England was at Euro 88, when they faced the Soviet Union, having already been eliminated by losses to the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands. Bobby Robson made a smaller number of changes, bringing in Chris Woods for Peter Shilton, Dave Watson for Mark Wright and Steve McMahon for Peter Beardsley. Only three changes, but it was seen as earth moving at the time because the England side for competitive games was more or less set in stone unless injuries occured. John Barnes was pushed up front alongside Gary Lineker and McMahon was brought into the midfield to offer more protection for Glenn Hoddle.

None of it made much of a difference as the cloud of elimination was too stubborn to shift and despite opening the scoring England went on to crumble to another 3-1 defeat. Spirits couldn't be lifted. Same could well prove the case against Costa Rica.

Can't see the point of starting Milner.

So everyone gets a WC game then, how nice!

Just hope we are not totally embarrassed by 'minnows' Costa Rica.

CR played Urg without "Him" & Italy played great against us, then rubbish against CR.
Hardly makes CR a good team.

He's still only 28, I'd hope to see him in the England squad for a few more years.

On the other hand I'd rather see Forster in goal rather than Foster.

If that really is the team he's going to put out then at least it's a reasonably balanced one for a change, I've always been a big fan of playing more than 2 midfielders!

Not gonna bother with this one. Gonna watch Italy/Uruguay instead.
Me too & I never thought I'd ever say that.

I'll watch England on catch-up or highlights.

Making nine changes, giving old soaps like Lampard their last outing and 1st competitive caps to others sums up everything that is wrong with the England set-up.

Even though we're out of the competition effectively putting out a B-team is an insult to the spirit of the world cup what with the top two positions in the group still to be determined. Whoever qualifies top should do so on merit not on the back of a bunch of losers effectively throwing the towel . There would be uproar if the shoe was on the other foot.

Here's hoping Hodgson giving everyone a "taste" of a world cup game isn't used as his excuse for possibly losing to Costa Rica. I won't hold my breath

Are you suggesting England's A team would have won against Costa Rica? We already had the pleasure of the A team twice at this World Cup. At least the B team has an outside chance.

It's a 23 man squad and Hodgson is at liberty to pick who he wants. Why should he worry about what Italy or Uruguay think? I doubt they are that bothered anyway. They would probably do the same thing too. Given that the more established players have lost the first 2 games then it's an ideal opportunity to give the others a chance to see what they can do.

I'm suggesting that win lose or draw you put out the strongest team available to you.

Nine changes sounds like it's being treated like just another worthless friendly. If you want to blood new players they have to be playing alongside those you'd expect to line up alongside so it's a complete waste of time throwing players onto a pitch in lineups you'd not field in a competitive match because it shows you nothing.
Two, possibly three changes max (with one being the goalkeeper) and the rest being the first team choice is the only way to judge how the youngsters fit into a team - and therein lies the problem with England. It's not a team. It's a group of eleven individuals thrown together.
If you're looking ahead a few years to the next competition why treat this last match as a joke unless of course you think that today's starting eleven will in any way resemble the starting eleven he'll field for the next qualifying campaign?

Hodgson is just another spoke in the broken wheel that is the England set-up.

It's a joke.
