I've always thought only the most blatant offsides should be given offside.
If a player makes a decent run past the defender and is say only a foot offside it should be allowed. |

Offsides is one thing that MUST be subject to a TV replay. Play on. If it's not a goal, it doesn't matter. If it is a goal, then go to the booth.
Adds excitement for viewers, and gets the decision right. What could be wrong with that. Nothing except the so-called top teams might get beat occasionally |

I don't think I have come across it in cricket. Or snooker.
team sports with a "goal" need an offside rule. I haven't checked, but I assume handball, waterpolo etc etc all have offsides. basketball might not.. |

Basketball hasn't got offside in the same manner as football, but there are three-second penalties to prevent players just sitting in the paint, so it's not too far away from preventing goal-hanging.

I've always thought to myself I'd love to see a game with no offside rule.
The striker standing alone in the box, maybe a defender near him, would be fun. |

One good thing about the offside rule was the need for linesmen.
In particular Jimmy Hill, as an emergency linesman. Jimmy Hill Emergency Referee - Clip from The Big : http://youtu.be/ntfslrhajAg |

The offside rule is a bit like Britains membership of the Eu. It shouldn't be abolished just have changes made to it.

Dunno if this is the same - but call *offside* ONLY if a player in the offside position touches it, if he's there obstructing the keeper (offside but not playing the ball) and it gets lashed in - then the obstruction law covers it? |

If a team keeps lumping it up to the big lad up front - and the keeper/defenders keep clearing it with ease, wouldn't the attacking team latch on to they need to do something different?

I think it was much better before when offside was offside, there is too much interpretation involved now as to whether a player is interfering with play.

Why mess with the beautiful game? Surely this World Cup is showing that the existing rules allow great matches to be played?

There is an offside rule in cricket which limits the numbers of fielders which have to be on that side of the field.

So you think a linesman should be judging if a player is 12 inches offside so no flag or 13 inches and the flag goes up? That would be impossible to judge (just in front is hard enough) and would make the game a farce.

If the offside rule was abolished, Big Sam would be unstoppable.
Let us never speak of this again. |

all sports have an offside rule, don't they?
rugby, American football, ice hockey. you need a rule of some sort, I think Quote:
Yep, pretty much every sport. An offside was given in the cricket between England and Sri Lanka only the other day. Offside decisions are given in golf and Formula 1 all the time and in cycling last year's Tour de France was littered with offside decisions.

Is it due to goal hogging ? I understand what the rule is, it is just trying to work out why the need for it that stumps me. Anyone know ?

In NFL they have a strange mythical beast called an ONSIDE KICK. The teams rarely have the courage to do it. NFL remains the best sport in the world.

It would be a helluva lot better if they got on it with though rather than having an ad break after every play which stops the clock.
