Dead rubbers are essentially friendless so yes, they are a bit dull.

It isn't a complete dead rubber as there are group positions to play for.

Fair enough that they both know they are through but you'd think you'd want the best draw for the next round.

Playing to see who avoids Brazil, Chile should care.

I wonder where the term 'dead rubber' comes from? Strange term, don't ya think?

The rest of the last round games all have something riding on them now don't they?

I know this means the whole competition/number of teams would need a reschedule in future - but often thought the benefit if finishing first over second was negligable (sometimes better to finish second?) so maybe if the group winners could skip a round and the runners-up played against other runners-up then there would be fewer *meaningless* games.

The other option, like the Euros when 24 teams will be involved, is for the best placed 3rd teams to carry on. But, to me, that rewards failure - come third, go home!!

Why don't you spend the time starting more and more meaningless threads ? Or take your Mrs out for a night ?

I believe that the term rubber used to mean a series, in the 1700s. Hence a dead rubber is a dead series. Not quite applicable in this football sense, but football has picked up the phrase and run with it, as have other sports.

I could be wrong...

Eng v Costa Rica is a meaningless rubber

the match to watch is Italy v Uraguy .... over on ITV 4
If things go south Italy could be on the plane along with
England and Spain !

A draw is enough for Italy to get thru
to last 16

Uruguay need a win to get thru

this makes for an exciting game !

I'm not too bored. Makes a change from endless soaps and celebrity/reality crap. I did think the England game this evening was boring as hell though.

I enjoy those last group games, same as the Champions League last group fixtures, teams can go from joy to pain in an instant. Now that Italy are out I will enjoy the games, each and every one of them, as a total neutral. I was delighted for Greece last night and tonight I will be supporting Iran.

So was I.

Just goes to show how a split second mistake by one player can change the game.

Think Ill be watching the Honduras v Swiss match tonite wed....... if the Swiss can get a win they could go thru to the last 16

Think Ill be watching the Russia v Korea match thurs nite

If Russia win they could leapfrog Algeria and go thru
to the last 16

If they get thru it will make Fabio look good and the press will say...
why did we replace Fabio with No Hope Hodgson ?

Good luck with that. Do let us know the score though so I can go bet my life savings on the outcome.
