Heavy metal growling/grunting
Anyone else hate it?
I just hate when great musicianship is ruined by some neanderthal on vocals growling like a bear. Vocals I like are screamers the operatic styles from the symphonic'progressive end of the spectrum. Vocals where you can make out the words and that have a bit of melody to them. |

I used to hate it but I got used to it over time. I listen to a lot of European bands who don't sing in English, so not understanding the words as they're sung, doesn't bother me anyway.
This is the song that got me into liking harsh vocals. I loved the music so much that I eventually just got used to the vocal. It's in German anyway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yom8nNqmxvQ Like yourself, I prefer the more melodic end of the Metal spectrum but it doesn't have to be a vocal melody. I actually find Symphonic far too lightweight for my taste, tbh. |

As you both know I love the Symphonic end of the Metal spectrum and many of those bands incorporate both operatic and some "harsh" vocals, Leaves' Eyes and Epica are good examples and, to a lesser extent, the likes of Delain and Xandria.
Whilst "harsh" vocals aren't really my thing Opeth can do no wrong for me. I've seen them many times and their performace @ Download last weekend was simply astounding, In saying that, though, their songs often incorporate both clean and "harsh" vocals in the same song! |

Opeth bore me witless I'm afraid, as does pretty much all Prog. There are a lot of bands who use both clean & harsh vocals in the same song though & often it's the same vocalist.
