It's not the Premier League's fault. It's not too many foreign players either. The problem is the lack of coaches at all levels. We have plenty of talented kids, most of it goes to waste in the academy system. What talent we do produce is coached in the "win at all costs, don't take any chances" mindset.
We have far more talent playing at top levels than teams that have done better than us. How come we can't beat Uruguay and Costa Rica who have far fewer quality players to pick from than we do?
Blaming the Premier League for our troubles is very much the wrong target. England were doing badly in tournaments when the First Division, as it then was, was made up of mostly British players. Most of those players were nowhere near international standard, so not selectable. At least the PL has raised standards of football to a very high level and the few English players who make it into top sides are almost all international quality.
Ultimately, we failed in Brazil because we have a lack of good central defenders, and the tactics were wrong. Maybe Smalling can be turned into a decent partner for Cahill, but we need four or five really. We have an abundance of forwards and enough midfield players. We have three good keepers. Just a weak and disorganised defence and that was what cost us in the first two games. Gerrard failed as a captain too. For all his enthusiasm he is not a great leader on the pitch, he doesn't read the game well. He should have spotted the left side weakness against Italy, for example, and sorted it out. In his position as a holding player he should have protected the defence better. But he isn't really a holding player by nature so didn't do that.
We should do what Belgium did. Put the emphasis on skills development and not on winning at all costs. Encourage flair and skilll, not just size and physical development. A player like Messi would not make it through our development system. Above all we need to employ more trained coaches.
