Need advice on what recording device to get

Hi,

I hope someone can advise....

I have a video mixer hooked up to various equipment and it outputs via a Phono Composite output. I wish to be abee to record the output from this, but now I realise it's becoming more and more difficult to purchase HDD recorders with analogue connectivity. I have seen devices that convert an analog signal to digital RF so that's fine to use that if necessary.

Ideally I would like to be able to record the output to a USB drive, so I can archive the recordings for later viewing, and then be able to play those back on any TV/player/PC with a USB connection.

Maybe USB drive isn't the way forward???? I don't really want to record into a computer and the recordings would generally be 5-8 hours. It's not HD quality, but I need to record in the best quality possible.

Has anyone any experience of what would be useful to me?

Thanks.

avermedia do some capture boxes that are really designed for capturing game play and in high definition. To record from composite you'd also need a composite to hdmi or component video adapter.

What's wrong with a DVD recorder? You can then play back the recordings on any DVD player.

Your problem is you're looking for an HDD recorder, you need to look for a DVD recorder - which although 'relatively' rare now are still easily available, usually complete with an HDD as well.

I'm not looking for a DVD recorder - As detailed in my original post, I need to be able to receord between 5-8 hours in one go in as high quality as possible. This simply wouldn't happen on DVD.

I have heard of recording TV direct to a NAS box - Anyone any experience of this or thoughts on it???

Thanks.

A DVD recorder with hard drive can record to the hard drive. Easily get 5-8 hours in the highest quality on that. Getting it off again if you need to might be another matter.

To record to a NAS drive you would need some sort of video capture device that could plug into your network and transfer data to the NAS drive. Done a bit of googling but failing to find anything that can do this at the moment.

As I mentioned in my previous post (and as Chris has also mentioned), most modern DVD recorders have HDD's as well, but because it's a DVD recorder it will accept analogue inputs to the HDD as well, and do what you're wanting.
