Hi I am about to install a projector instead of my current tv. I have virgin tivo and wondered if I required a separate amplifier in order to generate sound through the projector for tv programs
I inderstand that my home cinema can be connected via HDMI but how do I get the tv to play through that system also. The projector has 2 HDMI ports but my Panasonic home theatre only appears to have one.
Any help would be appreciated.

The HDMI on the Panasonic will be an output. As will the one on the TiVo box. The two on the projector will be inputs. So the only HDMI connections you can make are from Panasonic to projector and TiVo to projector.

What is the exact model of Panasonic? That will help determine what you can do with it to get sound from the TiVo.

How are you currently listening to the TiVo? Are you only using the TV speakers? Or does sound come out of the Panasonic system? If so how have you got everything connected up at the moment?

The Panasonic home theatre is SA-BTT190 and at the moment I only have the tv sound whilst using the tv and I have surround sound with the bluray. I have a 3 way hdmi splitter which doesn't seem to do anything nor do any of the optical cables. I have so many cables now that I am totally confused.
My main concern is when I get the projector, how do I get the sound from Tivo to the home theatre system? Do I need an additional amplifier that handles all the switching or is there a work around just using the amplifier on the home theatre which has only 1 hdmi port. I am much obliged that you have taken time to help.

Ignore the HDMI.

The Panasonic has an optical digital input on the back. The TiVo should have an optical digital output. So simply connect one to the other, dial up the Optical input on the Panasonic and that should work.

You can do that now if you want, doesn't matter if the TiVo and Panasonic are connected to the telly or the projector (or neither for that matter) the audio connection should work regardless.

Though you might want to read the manual to check exactly what buttons to press or menu options to select to get it working.

thanks I'll look into that although I already have optical cable setup between the bluray and the tivo. I can get sound through the home theatre but no video or I can have video with no sound. I also have my xbox connected optically and they all plug into an optical selector - could that be the problem?

The optical connection is audio only. For video you have to have the HDMI connected to the telly.

So set the Panasonic system to the optical input for sound and the telly to the TiVo input for video. Just make sure you turn down the TV speakers and just have the Panasonic system making the noise.

There must be a connection between the TiVo box and the TV that you are using to watch cable TV? So you select that on the TV as you have been doing. Use that for the pictures only, turn down the volume on the TV speakers.

You then select the Optical Digital input on the Panasonic system and use that for the sound.
