According to a recent poll anyway. It even beat off such things as scene's from alien, star wars, and the avengers. list of the top 5 is about half way down the article.

http://www.independent.ie/entertainm...-30383512.html

Still one of the most powerful scene's in the show for me, and even having seen it many, many times, and knowing full well they see each other again, it still has the ability to stir emotions as if I was seeing it for the first time. Well deserved I think. Certainly a credit to the team at the time that it can win a poll against scene's from huge blockbusters and the whole of sci fi after 8 years.

That's just plain silly.
A good scene but should not be beating the chestbuster or Darth's "I'm your father"

Bravo? Brilliant? Um, Beautiful? No?

Had to check which farewell scene. Yeah, well, it's definately the best one Rose did.

Tennant fanboys running rampant again

There are better scenes in that episode alone never mind the rest of Sci-FI, Horror and Fantasy. Ridiculos.

It would have been better if Rose hadn't returned 2 series later, I think... but even then I wouldn't consider it the greatest scene in science fiction. It wouldn't even feature in my top ten scenes in Doctor Who alone.

It's a good scene yes, but the best ever in all of Sci-Fi? Really?

All I can do is repeat what the Doctor says right at the end of that episode when Donna appears in the TARDIS.

what...? What...? WHAT?????

The title of this thread: the most overstated thing in science fiction

Indeed.

I love this scene to bits, it really has impact, no matter how many times I watch it, but best sci-fi moment ever? Not really!

Aside from the Star Wars entry, haven't seen any of the others on the list, but I'm sure there are better deserving moments than this one. Thing is, seen so many can't think of any right now!

Ridiculous indeed. And undermined later of course.

For my money you'd have to go a long way to beat the final scene in the original, 1968, Planet of the Apes movie with Charlton Heston. Even when you know what the final twist in the tale is, as almost everyone does by now, it's quite powerful.

Or Kirk, letting Edith Keeler die in City on the Edge of Forever. No way back there, even with time travel.

I have to agree with the majority vote on here. The OTT adoration of Rose really put me off her character. Not to mention the repeated references to her in both Martha's and Donna's seasons. At this point I don't care if I never hear her name nor see her again.

As for best scene in Scifi. Give me a break. As others have said, it's not even the best scene in DW! Maudlin and overblown ...

What a great turn up for Doctor Who - and it topped a list compiled from more than 90,000 reader votes!

Makes me happy to know that sci-fi fans can appreciate a bit of good old fashioned romance.

Ah, 10 and Rose . . those were the days . . .

I can't work out from this thread whether the negative response to this news is because people don't think that scene should have been number one, or if no scene from Doctor Who should have been number one.

For me, I don't think that scene is the best ever in Who or anywhere else. DW has plenty of iconic moments, and better Sci-fi moments, than Rose's big snivel-fest.

If we are going to chose a brilliant Who moment, up there to rival the best scenes in cinema and TV history, then how about that first reveal of the Daleks back in 1963, or the first regeneration, or the Cybermen breaking out of their tombs, or the Sea Devils rising from the deep, or the Dalek rising up the stairs - well, really, take your pick! Doctor Who is full of iconic and memorable scenes.
Rose's first farewell is sad, well acted, lays on the emotion with a shovel, but it's still a good sequence. Just not that good.

bit hard to say it's all tennant fanboys when it was based on votes of more than 90,000 people. That's not exactly a small vote, certainly too many people voting for a few hardcore 'Tennant fanboys' to be able to purposely sway the vote.

Considering this is a doctor who forum I'm quite surprised at the amount of people who are unhappy about the fact that something from doctor who beat star wars etc.

I know, don't really get it either. An amazing scene from a show everyone on here is supposed to love is appreciated by the sci fi community and yet some people are complaining about that fact.

Personally, I loved the whole sense of romance that RTD brought to the show and I still remember what an amazing companion Billie Piper was, particularly with David Tennant. Rose was voted best companion by the readers of Radio Times, too, so I can see why (outside of this forum) that scene remains so powerful and memorable.

Are we talking about that long, drawn-out, soppy sentimental scene in which Rose is about to go to the parallel universe for ever and ever and never be seen again, and while this is going on (and on and on) people are being exterminated in their thousands every second that the Doctor delays? Is that the one?

Just because I love something, it doesn't mean that I think everything about it is the best.

Even if I loved Star Wars, I'd be surprised if a vote came up with Jar Jar Binks as the most-loved character in sci-fi. Of course some people like him, but....

10 and rose is still the ultimate doctor/companion team for me also. As you say david Tennant is often voted one of the best, and sometimes the best doctor in polls, with billie often voted as the best companion so, I agree that it is likely the pairing of the two is generally popular outside of this forum, and this was one of the best scene's within there short (wish they'd had more than one series together ) yet unique time as a team.
