Advice please - Cheap, Easy Phone Wanted

Hi All

I'm a bit of technophobe when it comes to phones. I've currently got a Lumia something and hate it so looking for a replacement.

All I want from my phone is calls, texts and a good camera. What I don't want is Internet or Emails. I do like the whole touch screen thing though I'm not sure if any of the basic non-internet/smart phones have that facility.

Anyone got any good suggestions for a replacement phone please?

I don't think any of the modern basic phones have decent cameras, all the good cameras are on high end smartphones.

The phone with the best camera is the Lumia 1020. You don't have to use the internet, email etc if you don't want to, just unpin all tiles you don't care about and leave calls, texts and camera pinned to your homescreen.

It is useful to have a smartphone as apps like whatsapp are increasingly people's primary method of communicating.

Nokias usually have good cameras, good build. Your alternative if you don't like what you have is an Android phone that you won't use most of unless you change your mind. I do not want to throw around names I have no experience with, but I'd say you are after a budget Android phone. My advice would be to stay with the Nokia as you are not going to use most of the phone anyway.

Which Lumia model? Why did you choose it in the first place but now hate it?

I would not go for a Nokia Lumia myself as I am hooked on Google products so an Androider; but if given a discarded Lumia free I imagine I would be delighted.

To be honest, and no disrespect, but if you find a Lumia too difficult to use, you won't find anything else any easier. Maybe an iPhone but they aren't cheap.

I would agree, I know someone who is a bit of a technophobe, they tried and disliked both iOS and Android as being too complicated. I bought her a Lumia 520 and she absolutely loves it, finds it far more intuitive and simple for the basics.

Indeed, my dad who isn't a total tech Numpty but totally new to smartphones chose the same handset and he is well happy with it. As much as I like my droids I doubt he would have liked one as much and the iPhone is too expensive to justify for him... I wouldn't hesitate recommending a wp8 device to a newbie.

WP is not necessarily for newbies only. I am happy to let the OS decide how certain things are done and I don't need to control it every step of the way. I am not a newbie, I am not simple, I am not stupid. I just don't see a point of modifying everything.

I don't think anyone said it was... Just because it's an ideal choice for a newbie doesn't mean to say a techie wouldn't like it. To be fair I like them, but I'm just a heavy user of google services and android for me still has a fair lead on wp for features, including those that even non techies would find useful.

What I was getting at though is the interface is very simple so it makes it suitable to newbies. This is a good thing, in case you didn't realise

The op wants a cheap phone and hates their current phone, a Lumia. So a £300 Lumia 1020 is recommended. Then others recommended the (admittedly cheap) Lumia 520. I do wonder sometimes.

The only half decent phone to meet your requirements OP would be one of the Nokia Asha range. Have a look at the Nokia 301, it should do everything you want and they are about £50 now. Try on Amazon.

My sister had one of these and thought it ok until she dropped it down the toilet.
