This can only be interpreted in one way. They are laying the ground work for the explosive return of #HurricaneFerreiras

The current cast is probably the oldest since 2010 I would think?
If they are planning more ethnic characters, and I think their hand will be forced into introducing more, I really hope they are structured well enough to last. The Hartman's sounded good on paper but on screen were a disaster. I think we will probably see them introduce more now though. Kim is back in August so maybe her husband will join her. Perhaps he will be black. Maybe they could build a family around him if he has kids. Its all very well ticking boxes but the characters have also good to be entertaining and likeable. |

Too young?? I dunno most of the big characters are 40+ ( max, kat, Alfie, Phil, Shirley, Sharon, Carol, Ian etc & that's not forgetting the real oldies like Dot, Patrick, Stan.
They DO have a point on too white though. Is this supposed to reflect real life East End London?? Where are the hipsters & immigrants?? |

The world might be going to Hell in a handcart, but the BBC Trust won't let that deter them from number crunching and sticking to their silly little PC agendas.

Why don't they just let the writers decide what characters work for the moment. If they force the writers to introduce more older and racially diverse characters, they're likely to only be token characters. I'd rather the characters created were created for story purposes instead of pandering to politically correct agendas.

I'm actually surprised because we do have plenty of "older characters" and I don't think we have that many younger characters. Nowadays older characters get more screentime than the younger characters. We do need more ethnic characters though. But we don't want another Hartman disaster.

Does any viewer actually care, black or white, why don't they make decent storylining and proper character development priorities instead?

Some people say that they care about the person's acting ability and that they don't care about an actors ethnicity (in EastEnders) but but Brian True-May the producer of Midsomer Murders said that putting ethnic minority characters into the show "would not work", I'm sure of those same people would agree with him on this issue and in this instance race does matter to them.... |

I thought people watched Midsomer Murders because of the fun and games - ie: whodunnit?, and where have I seen them before?

I think some people do actually, hence why they watch Midsomer Murders.

The last black family that was introduced in EE the public practically chased them away with fire. Not because they were black of course but it just goes to show that the public care more about good stories than ethnicity or ethnicitys sake.
The thing that annoys me is that they are acting like EE is racist when they are obviously not. |

EE isn't racist, surely they're using the ethnic minority characters they've got very well. Denise is involved in the big Lucy storyline, Patrick's got a big story coming up etc. It's not as if they're being ignored or sidelined.

Eastenders has to balance representing the East End while appealing to what is still a very white country outside of London. I'm not saying white people won't watch non-white characters BUT I think soaps tend to reflect the general population rather than their own area.

If race really does not matter (as many claim) then it really doesn't matter if it become more diverse, does it? |
