Scholes: England could get worse
Interesting comments:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28037068 He suggests England may struggle to qualify for the next World Cup. Thinks the FA aren't doing enough to fix the situation and suggests Roy is getting an easy time from the press compared to previous England managers. Just his opinions of course but it's interesting to see someone with such a glum outlook on the future. |

He could be right. Trouble is, 4 months from now no-one will care about England. The focus will be on the Premier League.

Not hard to disagree with him.
Despite some positive signs against Italy, England have never looked anything like a quality team in this World Cup. Better than 2010 maybe, but I would argue that apart from comparing the way they played against Italy with the way they did two years ago, England have not improved at all since Euro 2012. In that tournament England drew with France, beat our bogey team Sweden 3-2 and then the hosts Ukraine, topping a difficult group. Watching England at this World Cup, I cannot see them achieving the same results. As for the so-called young talent coming through...really? We're kidding ourselves if we think the next Gascoigne, Lineker, Moore or Charlton is to be found amongst the players on the pitch against Costa Rica. Whenever people talk about "positive signs" for England it sounds like a parent trying to praise their kid who maybe tries hard at sport but deep down is nowhere near as good as the big boys - "that was a good pass you made in the second half" or "well played, you came so close to winning that game". Sorry but all I see in the short and medium term is England struggling to qualify for tournaments against mediocre opposition, and continually being found out against the decent teams. |

I love Scholes' opinions at the moment. Who would have thought he would be so outspoken after he retired.

I think he's right. England will beat crap teams but lose when it comes to the big games.
The trouble is, we'll qualify from a totally crap & weak group, besides Switzerland and the media will say how good we are & we can win the Euro's. Que people buying flags, & kits AGAIN, before we crash out early and scratch our asses at what went wrong. Repeat this every 2 & 4 years. Simply put we're not good enough. Scholes is spot on. |

Yes, it does seem odd that he spent his whole career saying nothing but now he can't shut up.

Anyone would think we used to be world beaters the way some people are reacting to our performance in this World Cup. |

We would improve if, instead of lofting the long ball at the first opportunity, we actually made our way up the pitch by passing the ball with short secure passes. We have to get out of the mentality of letting the long ball go as soon as possible.

"We're going backwards from 1990 and the era of Paul Gascoigne and that 'conveyor belt of talent'.
In Euro 1992 we finished bottom of our group with a team consisting of Carlton Palmar, Andy Sinton and Keith Curle. We then failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup. In terms of talent and results we have been pretty consistant over the last 40 years. I don't expect much to change. |

Scholes. Another quality player forced to play on the left instead of where he normally played for United.
Wonder if he's talking about Gerrard when he says "When there is a simple pass of 10 yards, they might try and smack it 80 yards. They will do things to try and get themselves noticed." |

I think he's exaggerating a little bit, we'll never be as bad as Wales or Scotland. But he's right about Hodgson and Greg Dyke, English football will continue to be a bad joke as long as those two are in charge of it, and too I don't understand why the press are giving them such an easy time.

It probably will get worse. When England lose their seeding due to poor performances we will have to play the likes of Germany or Italy in qualifying instead of Switzerland, Ukraine, Poland, etc.

Forget Gazza and 1990, it's not obvious we've gone backwards since the late 90s early 2000s, because put us in the 2002 qualifying group now - Germany, Greece and Finland - we'd just about finish 3rd. |

Scholes is absolutely spot on with his comments. I find myself agreeing with everything he's said in recent months.

Wales are actually starting to get together a decent national side. Having 2 teams in the PL has helped, and now Cardiff have buggered of to the Championship again, focus can be put back on Swansea. |

Scholes is a very rare breed of English footballer, one who could actually be regarded as world class.
He's always struck me as someone who just gets on with his job to brilliant effect. Before it was as a player, now it's a 'pundit' offering his opinion on footballing matters. |

And Switzerland would be more likely to be one of the seeds we might have to play against? |

Yes, it does seem odd that he spent his whole career saying nothing but now he can't shut up.
Now his job is to give his opinions, reviews, commentary etc so he does that. I used to serve people at a 24 hour petrol station. Now I fix peoples computers and set up networks etc so I do that now and no more serving people at petrol stations. |

One thing I would say is why don't these former players get involved in coaching and helping our youngsters...they do seem quick to give an opinion which is totally within their rights.
However their experience and input would be more useful helping somebody on the side-lines. |

How could England get any worse?
![]() They were out after the second group game & it's not possible to be out sooner than that. I'm not sure about England struggling to qualify though. England always seem to get easy qualifying groups for major tournaments & as long as that continues, they should be all right. The problem is when England get the the tournament itself & then they go belly up, because they're just not good enough. |
