He needs to grow a pair and stick up for his wife, he stands by and lets Shirley aka mother of The year! talk to her like trash constantly, she just got a vile tongue all the time, I'm glad Phil is giving her a taste of her own medicine, her attitude stinks!

Maybe he should be more grateful that his wife is putting up with his father and sisters in her own house, when they just walk all over the place.

I thought that, I'm glad Nancy said something when Shirley said all Linda's kids hated her. She is so vile to Linda and I know she is far from perfect, but look at Shirley and the mess she has made of her life.

Mick is just weak.

You don't know how much I agree Harlowe! I've been saying for a while now that Mick has his sisters on a pedestal (Shirley's being higher than Tina's of course) whilst he tends to just pay lip service to his wife, never really sticking up for her. Couldn't believe it when he asked her to make Shirley a co-licencee. Unbelievable. She bends over backwards to accommodate his family yet Mick takes it all for granted. Every time Shirley snarls really badly in Linda's direction he should be nipping it in the bud and reminding her that she's living under Linda's roof and if she's wise she'd show her a bit more respect.

It's not just Shirley though, he stood there (IIRC) whilst Tina told LINDA, CO-OWNER OF THE PROPERTY AND STAN'S DAUGHTER-IN-LAW that it was nothing to do with her if Stan stayed there and recuperated with them or not! I maybe imagined this but I'm also sure she said something about Linda not being family?! If I'd been Linda I'd have knocked her into next week - along with her packed bags!!! But Mick? Nothing. If he was my husband he'd have been in for a tongue lashing and a sharp lesson in loyalty with a threat of HIS bags being packed if he didn't keep his nasty sisters in line.

I was really pleased that Nancy stuck up for her mum too. It was rather nice to see Nancy and Linda bonding tonight

Shirley was horrible, she's hurting so she went on the attack and tried to hurt Linda in turn. Why? Linda was only trying to help FGS. Mick angered me when he said something along the lines of "... it might surprise you but ...." about Linda being able to pour oil on troubled waters re Dean. Why would it be surprising? Once again it's a backhanded compliment from him running his wife down a bit to his sister No wonder Shirley thinks she's got permission to say what she likes!

Man up Mick

Very much agree lotty, Linda is talked to like dog poo by Shirley and Tina and even by Stan at times, she let those leeches hold up in her home and let Shirley take a chunk of her business when she didn't flipping deserve it.

He shows Linda no loyalty if he did he would stick up for her instead of dancing around his gutter ridden, vodka swigging 'sister' like she the second coming doing everything to accommodate her, it's going to be even worse once it's out her being his mother, his going to feel even more loyalty to her.

Actually, I really love Shirley and Mick's close relationship. Its all building up to the big reveal, just like Dean/Linda, I would like to know a little bit more about their childhood together. Shirley has done some questionable things but I can sort of see, when you strip it back, why she has done them. I like the moments of friendship that Shirley and Linda have, few and far between, but they are there and I like both characters.. If you recall, when the Carters first arrived, Linda was absolutely awful to Shirley and she was the one who made Mick choose between them, when you dislike a character, it's very easy to try to deflect the blame but I think it has worked both ways. And yes, I'm very aware that I will be shot down instantly with my comment. Hahaha.

It is a tad unrealistic that Linda gets bawled out for her over bearing parenting of Johnny but Shirley pickpockets her estranged son and everyone shrugs their shoulders!

Not going to shoot you down lol! but ...

- Shirley and Mick couldn't have had a 'childhood' together as she's so many years older than him. He grew up with Tina not Shirley.
- Sorry but nothing will make me believe there's a valid reason for trying to drown your son/little brother in the bath!
- Mick's reaction when he found out was pathetic. He aggressively shoved his old and frail dad under the shower when he thought HE did it but Shirley gets a hug with no questions asked?
- Linda was nasty because Shirley had burnt down her pub! I'm only surprised she's letting her anywhere near this one
- I definitely want to know why Mick thinks Shirley walks on water though. If it's just because she was kind to him as a kid (when he now knows she tried to drown him!) that's a bit lame. Mick almost worships Shirley!
- I too love the scenes where Linda and Shirley are nice/kind to each other. There should be a few more of them.

Exactly! It's this inconsistency in Mick's attitude which is driving me up the wall. Through love Linda makes some parenting mistakes (she's not unique, we all do), Shirley abandons her kids, steals off them etc and Mick doesn't bat an eyelid?!?!?!

It's hardly a shock when Shirley does something like this.

If you like sweet then you've got Roxy and Denise, if you want snobby you've got Cora and Sharon, but if you want plain nasty then you've got Shirley. The surprise comes when she actually does something nice.

I'm never going to defend her behaviour because it's indefensible, but I love watching her.

Hahaha. *shot down*

-With regards to Mick/Shirley childhood, I didn't word it correctly, she was in his life until he was about 22/23?, it has been mentioned many times by Mick that she was the one who went looking for him and Tina, got them out of care and was always there for them if they needed her, Tina mentioned that Shirley always had their dinner on the table and had them ready for school and she has also mentioned stories from their childhoods which involved Shirley. - I'd like to know a little bit more about that.

-I really think they should go down the PND route with the drowning, back then it wasn't so well known and Shirley wouldn't have had any help with it as no one(besides Babe and Sylvie) knew that she had, had the baby. I think it would be an interesting route to take and explore, it could also explain why she struggled with her kids. Although we know she left them, we don't really know why, she stayed with Kevin for 10 years or something with the kids and she didn't walk out prior to then. They have never stated categorically why and I would like this to be explored. She never went on to have anymore kids.
She did choose to find the kids eventually so part of her new she shouldn't have left and she has often said that she was a rubbish mum.

-I still think there is something around the fire, Shirley did say to Linda sincerely that it was an accident, I think there might be more to the Shirley/Linda past.

-Mick and Shirley are very close and their scenes are always played very emotionally and they always seem to back each other up, this is another reason that I would like their relationship to be explored, Mick has said that Shirley was like a mum to him growing up, so maybe that's (ironically) why. Also, the closer they are, the bigger the fall out when the truth is revealed.

-Yes, I love it when Shirley and Linda have those small moments of clarity and get along, I'd like to see them do this more often, it would be nice for Shirley to be on side with her family, if that makes sense? I'd like to see her and Shirley talk about the past and sort it out..

Bib: I know Shirley has done some questionable things and some of her behaviour, I understand, I don't condone it but, you can see where she is coming from, even though she is going the wrong way with it. (personally I think its a protective front, like a defense mechanism, keeping everyone at arms length.) She abandoned her kids, just like her mother abandoned her, I think that will be a contributing factor. But, I don't think she would steal from Dean, the Shirley that first arrived would not give into Phil's demands...

She could shit on the bar and he'd just tell Linda to clean it up.

Oh sure, Shirley acting like Genghis Khan's wet nurse isn't a surprise to anyone, I would just expect some reaction from her relatives!
