Not a great game but drama at the end. The Dutch did well and will maybe feel its their time winning like that.

Reminds me a bit of the Man United/Bayern Munich Champions League final in '99, the way they turned it around right at the end.

It really is Ferguson II with LVG, poor performance but a win. He even get's the extended extra time when required...

Gutted both teams played against each other as I think both deserved to get through to the last 8.

Well done to Netherlands though, they've been a very good team so far. They did get very lucky with that penalty, as without that I think we'd have been heading for a penalty shootout again.

Incredible ending, such drama.

Absolutely crushing for the Mexicans but what a boost for the Dutch.

One Man team, Robben

kind of wanted extra time, and the dutch hallucinations

Glad Holland are through. Was in danger of being a Central and South American dominated next round.
Mexico like Chile would have failed against the usual suspects, even if Chile were unlucky.

Why did Mexico stop playing after taking the lead? Its just bloody bonkers. You can't keep on relying that your keeper is gonna pull off world-class saves for the rest of the game.

The Dutch deserved the win in the end, and a hard fought win it was too. It will them enjoying an extended drink break after this game.

Ah, OK

Well, you have to say the Dutch aren't having anything easy in this World Cup; trailing to Spain before demolishing them, trailing to Australia before seeing them off, and today trailing to Mexico until four minutes from time and then Sneijder, Robben and Huntelaar did the business.

As everyone has pointed out, the Mexicans really had that coming for sitting back and trying to defend their way to the final whistle - which you just can't do against a side with pace and the intricate skill of Robben, Sneijder, Kuyt etc.

Curious match in which the domination swung between both sides frequently as they played in fits and starts to conserve energy and effort.

Let's also reflect that today we've once again seen the folly of playing football in ludicrous furnace-like conditions.

I don't see why that would be a bad thing.

One of the all time great substitutions then from van Gaal. He was getting slated for taking RVP off but Huntelaar came on and set up the equaliser before scoring the winning pen.

They lost a whole load of energy celebrating their goal, which was noted by the Dutch who waited, resting, in the shade.

Holland did what they needed to do and Mexico did what they usually do in the world cup.

Bobby Charlton been using the eraser again; van Gaal's the man

I don't think they deseved to win, but merited extra time.

Still, they didn't perform well, but won and that's what you need to do to win World Cups. I hate Robben but he makes things happen.

I agree. Up until the Mexico goal Mexico were in control.
After Mexico scored they just allowed Holland to take control as if it was Holland's turn to get a goal.
I don't understand why teams don't learn from this, that as soon as you're one up just giving control to the other team and playing deep is suicidal.

Surely you'd want to keep the pressure on, and you'd need to be at least two goals ahead to try this tactic of going into defensive mode?
At least then you've given yourself a bit of a buffer if the risk doesn't work.
A one goal lead just simply isn't enough, especially in this World Cup.

I wanted the Dutch to win, but not by diving their way to it. I'm of the opinion that if you theatrically dive, then it's no penalty. I didn't even think there was any contact bar Robben's intent to cause a touch. Still, Mexico were their own downfall, for their silly tactics after scoring.

But they've got two extra days rest compared to half the quarter finalists and the lowest ranked opponents left in the draw.

the more i see the "pen", the more it is obviously a dive. Cheating.

Yes, the mexican player should have not given Robben the opportunity to dive, but Holland have gone through by a blatant manipulation of the ref.

If it were England on the receiving end of that, the country would have been in uproar!

The close up just shown shows the defender stand on Robbens toe jus before he went down, there for its a pen despite the dive.
