When comparing the price plans I can get from mobile companies in the UK I always get the feeling they are selling me lots of crap I don't need.

On a mobile phone contract, I basically want lots of data (2gb+) and just a few texts and minutes.

In countries like Spain or Germany, I can choose what I need, how much data, how many minutes, how many texts.

Here in the UK, if I want 2gb of data, I also need to take unlimited minutes or unlimited texts, most of the time.

IS there any operator that will let you choose?

I'm currently looking into changing my price plan and have found the compare websites to be useful.
I don't no how to post a link, but just google "compare mobile phone price plans" and several come up.

I feel that the web sites only have the most popular plans.

If you were to go into a shop for the network your interested in, they may have access to more.

When my wife was with Voda for example we went in to try and save money, the assistant scrolled through pages and pages of available plans to find something suitable. There were literarily hundreds we could of chosen from.

Data costs them more than minutes & texts so they can give them away more than the data. There are a few providers like giffgaff where you can get unlimited data/texts & 250 minutes for £12 per month.

You can get a sim only deal with Three for £12.90 per month 1 month rolling contract, 200 minutes, 5000 texts and all-you-can-eat data.

http://store.three.co.uk/SIM_Only/Voice_Pay_Monthly

or you can pick any of the others.

You can also get a pay as you go from Three all in one 15 which gives you 300 minutes, 3000 texts and all you can eat data for £15 top up.

i was rather under the impression that we had one of the cheapest mobile networks in europe?

texts in particular cost the network nothing to carry.

We do. Although I wouldn't say it costs nothing to carry a text.

I think it depends, my cousin has just moved here from Germany and its cheaper for her to phone Germany on her German PAYG mobile, and for people in Germany to phone her on it, than I can with my mobile or landline - I think it costs her €0.07 per minute to make a call and nothing to receive, I tried ringing her from my mobile in the same room and a 30 sec call cost £1.20..

I think the poster you quoted is referring to prices within the UK? I mean I pay £12.90 for 600 Mins, 3000 texts and unlimited data on Three. I doubt it's that cheap in Any European country and America.

Why, when the OP said all they really want is lots of data, and you can get that on a one month SIM-only deal from Three for over £7 less than the One Plan 12-month deal?

It's very good value for money though, I don't know anyone who wouldn't benefit from unlimited tethering when they are out and about. It's changed everything for me. I can now survive if the broadband goes down.

I think thats a load of rubbish (data costing them more) they are just cashing in on whats hot at the moment, before they made money on texts, then it became calls, then it was going over call allowance, now its data, they are all in on it together. Which is great because land internet will never be at risk at this rate and i wouldn't want a situation where we all depend on the mobile networks for our internet, where they all have terrible CS. Id rather deal with TT than any mobile network.

the £12.90 1 month rolling from 3 is the best deal which I've posted links for as the poster isn't too fussed on minutes and texts.

Even better if you're prepared to sign up for 12 months is the £9.90 plan for 600 Mins, 3000 Texts and 1GB data with the £3.00 all you can eat data add on making £12.90 in total. If you do the one month plan you only get 200 minutes.

it used to be before data came along.
Now for example when I go home for holidays in Spain I pay 6 euro for 1.4 gb of data. It only includes data, voice and texts cost quite a lot. But I never use anything but data. So it turns out to be much cheaper than any deal I can get in the UK.

In Germany, I can also buy data and voice/text bundles independently. So I can buy 1gb for 9 euro and that's it, no text or vioce unless I really need to.

For combined Data, Texts and Minutes our rates are probably the cheapest in the modern world. You would never get 600 Mins, 3000 texts and Unlimited data for £12.90 on the continent or in the States.

that's the plan I currently have on an iphone contract, and I will probably "downgrade" to that tariff as soon as my minimal contract is over. However, it pisses me off to pay for 5000 mintues when I might only use 10.

the £12.90 deal someone else mentioned doesn't include tethering. I don't use it often but I like to have it if I need it.

the 12.90 deal doesn't include it, no. You'd need to get the £20 12 month One Plan or £23 1 month rolling One Plan, but you'd need to be quick as unlimited tethering is coming to an end when they introduce new price plans, unless you sign up now, the clock is ticking...

i don't really need unlimited tethering, maybe I use it once a month and for just a few hundred mb tops..

but on my phone I use at least 3gb.. I listen to plenty of online radio/streaming music apps

I know Three have a plan where you get 2Gb a month tethering, i looked but couldn't find it, do you know what one it is?

I think if you get a 12/24 month contract you also get free 0800 numbers.

I think that's for the new phone plans..
don't even get me started with the 0800/0845 silliness that Three have been showing the last few months. I find it annoying as hell. Let me find ways to spend my minutes calling 0800 numbers, LOL.

I have heard of terrible people who break the terms of their contract and use FoxFi and change the browser user agent of the tethered device. Works a charm (alegedly).
